Morning Audibles 5.24.10 -

15 minutes into the close last Friday we had the "flash melt-up" on no volume (actually one of many we've seen over the past year)... Just before that, things had been steadily weakening all afternoon and there was a threat that the SPX would take out its morning low print (which would have made for a very nervous weekend)...

[snark on] But then, by some miracle, traders suddenly, without warning, all became interested in stocks and pushed the DOW up 130 points in 15 minutes on NO VOLUME... [snark off]

Or was it just this trader (whose desk is in the basement of 33 Liberty) that "fat fingered" another one?

As I settle in to my keyboard this morning I note (OMG! Futures are pointing down to, amazingly where the "flash melt up" occurred)...

And so it goes... "Flash Crashes" (under investigation by the SEC), followed by "Flash Melt-ups" 15 minutes before a Friday with markets teetering on a technical breakdown (no "investigation" announcements forthcoming)...

You know, all the average healthy behavior that happens in a "TYPICAL RECOVERY"... But take heart people, It's not just the "Communist States of America" that this happens, it's happening all over the world.

May 24 (Bloomberg) -- A bartender at my neighborhood pub recently asked me how the Shanghai stock market was performing. I said it was at about 2,600 points. He jumped and said, “No! The Communist Party wouldn’t let that happen.”

He spent the next 10 minutes trying to convince me that the Communist Party would make the market rise to 8,000 in the next three to five years.

“Look, the Hong Kong market is at 20,000,” he said. “Shanghai at 8,000 would be very reasonable.”...(continued)...

Peeps... I think this is where we're heading today... MAX PAIN into close...

@Amen

They executed at CV's command...

My trade executed at 15:46 :-)

I think something may have ended at 2:15 with the 1086.10 print. I can see 5 waves down from there, a near .618 retrace, and now a hard down for the start of a 3.

Any one care to offer insight or invalidate? I know I could very well be wrong here.

C,

Nice dude.

Just joing the action here after a busy morning/early afternoon. Wow, a little ugliness at the close?

McHappy,

Not sure....but if so, buckle up.

Nice trade on the puts, Ra!

Clink!

Ugliness?

Looks pretty hot to me.

lol.

1086.70 was the .786 retrace from 1095.09-1055.90. From the looks of things, 1086.1 started this leg down.

McFearless said...

yeah, Ra, nice trade man.

I'm sure you all already know but lots of housing/sentiment data this week.

I really think ahab has the housing forecast down.

2y Ts auction tomorrow. Pre-auction selling might drive some risk assets higher in the morning. Today's EURJPY action was less weak than we saw during the unwind of the previous week. There are a lot of shorts to squeeze if this pair can get up off the mat.

I can't wait to see some updated charts this evening. The only question is was this the start of a fifth down or a third down? Based on wave action, I'm thinking a third.

@ben: Fair point. LOL. Depends on one's perspective, I guess.

Manny,

Celts on tonight?

Rondo....wow.

@McF

It was kind of lucky timing...

I happened to be fooling with some 9 months daily charts and noticed something...

It seemed a pretty important triangle was CONCLUDING either today or tomorrow at 1082...

Si I figured... I'll take a chance and "short" into the close in case it's today...

Just got the trade off about a minute before it tanked :-)

Gotta go...

I'll check back witcha y'all later...

@ben: Yeah, what a pleasant surprise this playoff run has been. That hustle play by Rondo was the play of the year, IMO. Should be included in kids instructional videos and shown at basketball camps everywhere on the virtues of sheer effort and will.

This team is playing better than that '08 team was at the same time of year. No qualms about the playing and winning on the road. What a treat to watch. The passing, defense and overall team play has been very clinic-like. Surgical. Even Sheed stepping up. I really hope they don't mess around tonight though. Gotta put the final nail in the coffin and then bring on the Lake show.

McFearless said...

nothing wrong with being lucky sometimes.

Chance finds us all from time to time.

be back later tonight.

Mannwich said...

@ben: So, yes, they are playing tonight.

They had one offensive trip the other night that had 8 passes where the ball never touched the ground. No dribbles. That's real basketball right there. It's someone new stepping up every night. Rondo's now the glue though and who makes them better NOW than that '08 team. He will win a league MVP within the next few years. You heard it here first.

The SEC will come a knockin'. Only the TBTF are allowed to profit on that move.

Manny,

When he (Rondo) dove for that loose ball in the last game you could pretty much see the game was over. Maybe it's just because of how I feel about the general state of things but the social decay is evident more than ever in pro hoops to me. Half those guys don't even care about the game it seems, they just want the check. At least back in the day when those guys made nothing you knew they were playing because they loved it, and more than anything they wanted to win.

I don't think MJ played for the money, that guy just wanted to destroy everyone else.

Basketball is going to get what's coming to it.

Nothing wrong with being stupid either... I've been holding TZA with my stop a break of 655.44 or 1095.09. Hopefully I am well rewarded in the next day or two for my patience today.

Have a good evening everyone.

Totally agree, ben. Orlando should be ashamed of themselves for the effort (or lack thereof) they're putting in this series. Part of that is just the Celtics taking it to them though, so they should get a lot of the credit. The Celtics as a team clearly want it (and smell it). You can see it in their body language. Very focused and confident. They KNOW they're going to beat these guys and all this group seems to care about is winning and not who gets the credit. A lot of that's mental and sheer effort. Some teams you have beat before you even step onto the floor.

We used to see diving hustle plays like that all the time but nowadays not as much, it seems, so it makes that Rondo play even better. It reminds a lot of us of the "old days" when guys dove for loose balls all the time, but for him to also get up and score is just astonishing. What an incredible play. As a hoops purist, that stuff gives me goose bumps.

@McHappy: Your "Wince" is certainly living up (down?) to his nickname in Toronto. LOL. Pathetic.

Thursday is the full moon.

Expect some kind of market psychosis to emerge...

It may even end up lining up nicely with a lower high, but I wont get ahead of time.

Sometimes at night I lay awake thinking about Paulson and Soros's GLD positions, and I wonder if there isnt some kind of mega arb trade there lurking under the hood.

I'm sure we'll never know until its done though.
