After careful deliberation, and, OF COURSE, BY COMMITTEE (as that is the only way things should ever be done)... The following RULES CHANGES are to be adopted and implemented immediately at SURVIVOR CAPITAL (after all, it's not good enough that you simply SURVIVE anymore, you are ordered to do it in the prescribed method)...
Changes:
- The use of the phase "nanny nanny boo boo, stick your head in doo doo" will no longer be tolerated when referring to other blogger comments...
- You may NO LONGER tell anyone that their "grandma wears army boots"...
- "I know you are but what am I", as a rebuttal, will be returned to Pee Wee's playhouse (where it belongs)...
- You must all "clean up" your acts, by using GROOMED canines, and references, in your avatar-ology... (Mangy Mutt - you're going to have to clean up your act)...
- 5 times per day, all bloggers must kneel on their carpets and face "Mecca" (the location of the Fusion Capital offices in Manhattan), and utter the prescribed prayers...
- You must IMMEDIATELY switch to COFFEE (from TEA) for your morning beverage... As any association with "tea" whatsover might sketch you out as a teaBAGGER, which is unacceptable...
- Fines for INFRINGEMENTS of any of the above policies will be levied, and paid to the following righteous causes... "The Nancy Pelosi botox fund", "The re-elect Barbara Boxer campaign", and the "West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce" (which needs a new Barney Frank statue because someone disMEMBERED the other one for some peculiar reason - ouch!)...
That should be it for now... But I'll be sure to expedite any further rules changes as they come about... We have a committee, (and ten CZARS), funded by the US taxpayer, that works 24/7 for that sole purpose...
Please enjoy your morning coffee! (oh - but you MUST enjoy it in one of the following prescribed methods)... Any other way will be unacceptable...
Thank you for your continued patronage... THE MANAGEMENT

Cvienne - Speaking of doing things yourself, you remember that Neaderthal nieghbor I mentioned yesterday.
Well the other day, he could not get his car started. So that night I went over to change the oil for him, I guess he heard me and came out, at which point I ran away - Yup with the drain plug in hand.
At any rate, it turns out it was only his battery, but once he got it started it only ran for about 5 minutes before the engine siezed.
I guess the point I am trying to make is sometimes it is best to let others do it themselves instead of trying to help.
Now the poor guy has to take the bus...

I never thought this blog was all about that CV, not in the least...
a pessimist is simply a well-informed optimist
You know the most armageddon book I've ever read about markets...it's Conquer the Crash, by a long shot..... lets take a look at some of the 2002 books recs:
1. Get your money in the safest banks (good idea, I think so)
2. Get your cash in the safest cash/cash equivalents (good idea)
3. Despite his views on gold and silver he clearly states BUY THEM ANYWAY,, THEY ARE REAL MONEY! (uh....2002...yeah, good idea)
4. make sure your insurance is held with the safest/most financial sound insurance companies (good idea)
5. don't own stocks (you've avoided the worst decade in US stocks)
6. Don't be in debt (good idea)
7. don't own real estate (I suppose this could be up for debate)
8. Make arrangments to have access to cash in case you need to leave the country (good idea)
Karen
If one of them breaks then can you imagine even a small handful of diamonds trying to make their way through the intestines? Talk about being bent over in excruciating pain.
Ra,
re p/c, I can't, this is the main problem with it, people could be putting on bullish/bearish spreads and I wouldn't know it
this is why I like to follow the 10 day MA for p/c primarily rather than looking at any given day in isolation, this one has its limits for sure.
Sorry AmenRa, but Rich Shit was the first thing to come to my mind (OK second -Nanny Nanny Poo Poo) was first) when I read your above.
Mangy Mutt
that's disgusting...and a lot of diamonds, hope they were real and someone didn't give him some CZ's.
Speaking of AAPL...
You could look at a daily chart going back a year and almost see 3P&ADH...
see, AIG is still loaded with diamonds as well:

Didn't Jamie say as much in the $vix sonar? wasn't their a large put buyer? but his real motive are unknown.. tho others trade on it.. well, that was my take.. that, and I have no business being involved with $vix or vxx ever.. and seems like i have no business being in this market either.. at least in size.
I NEVER should have posted that diamond/condom link..
re internships..., if y'all don't mind a little solicitation here (and, no, i'm not offering up my offspring to the white slave trade)
the kiddoh interned this summer for the "alternative" paper in dayton, which after one article gave her extra hours WITH pay. for next summer, she's looking for an internship in a slightly larger metropolis (NOT NYC) such as seattle, san francisco, london, so throwing this out for networking, if anyone has leads/suggestions.
after last winter-spring studying in ireland and with some continental travel, she'd love to find something abroad and is networking family contacts in london and stockholm.
she originally intended to major in graphic arts. Decided on creative writing as her stronger suit after the theater department wouldn't let her double major in writing AND theater.
preferably and broadly, looking for any position in which her writing/editing skills would be exercised, so opportunities for experience in communications, publications, scripting, story-boarding, p.r., advertising, etc. pay would be nice, but not critical as she is on full boat scholarship. less debt incurred in summer living is better though.
she is re-considering the possible direction for grad school from creative writing to anthropology/history so, for example, positions in a museum environment would be of interest.
we now return to our regular non-commercial programming.
"but his real motive are unknown.. tho others trade on it"
no way, that would not be rational thinking, nobody trades like THAT....pffft.
that little formation is morphing into a wedge.. whatever.. makes me ill.
72,
If I come across anything in Philly area I'll let you know. I've read some of her stuff as you know, she's got a talent.

oh well CV, lets just move on.

I'm careful NOT to act like I know everyone here.....another pathetic non-edited post by me.
I'm getting seasick on the spx..
Sorry, was away for a while, then busy getting furnace serviced. Just catching up.

I-man, Like you I have been waiting for a REAl pull back or actual decline, but I just don't think it will happen yet.
I have only been holding 1 short that is has been getting hammered, but if this market turns and turns as quickly as I think it might.
I could have a fairly nice payday.
Mangy Mutt
Its cool Mutt, I trade 1min charts and change my mind about 1000 times a day...
I could short, close it, and flip to the long side in about 30 seconds depending on what I see.
Probably best to ignore the I if you are a position or swing trader... or any trader with a holding period longer than a few minutes for that matter.

I will be fading this "breakout" tho... think its a fake out.
going to be some prime CRE downtown that might coming available in the next 24 months....
@McF
To clarify my ARMAGEDDON posture...
It's clear to me that the imbeciles who berate me for the "cautionary" hints I dole out never tactually take the time to examine the TRUE NATURE of why I make the preparations...
It has nothing to do with torches & pitchforks...
It has EVERYTHING to do with COST...
After the Fed fails (which it will), either deflation or inflation will occur (then the next one will occur after the first on)...
Either way COSTS for basic things will be effected (food, energy)...
They will COST MORE than they do relative to what people make today...
When costs go up, people will consume less... Moving in with the family falls under the same category (because the cost is too high to live on your own)...
Less overall consumption means that certain goods will no longer be profitable to bring to market (specialty & variety of foods, for example)...
Americans have NO CONCEPT of what I just said because they have just about everything... But I lived in Italy for a dozen years and let me tell you, on my trips back to the States, I had to carry bact (to Italy) suitcases full of certain things (because there was no market for them in Italy)...
So most of my ARMAGEDDON PREPARATION (as others see it)... Is simply small steps that will allow me as little disruption as possible in lifestyle (& things I enjoy), if things get either too expensive, or scarce on the margin...
I know, I know... insanity is doing the same shit over and over expecting different results, but they know this too.
It seems lately, only the insane are being rewarded in this tape anyhow.
Mutt,
I hope you are not holding a levered ETF
BAD!
So I have a parrot, his name is Orsin, I think he has the right to be out during the day, something my family collectively also agreed on.
So during the day Orsin has free run of the house, yesterday he found his way into the bathroom and onto the sink, where the toothbrushes are.
Orsin chewed the bajeezers out of my toothbrush, I mean seriously, why would he do that to my toothbrush, when he could have do it to my wife's.

Ben, I saw that Wilmington Trust thing early this morning on Twitter and could not for the life of me remember where I heard warning on them before.. glad you cleared that up : )
I-man, you have a lot more skill then I could ever hope to have, I just do some research on a couple of things.
Maybe some day I can see the chart movement you guys are talking about, but for now it is blurry.
Mangy Mutt
I-Man.. should we fade ourselves when we are thinking alike? LOL.. nah, too late for that : )
Besides, even ben in on the stay short till tomorrow bandwagon..
@I-Man
"I trade 1min charts and change my mind about 1000 times a day..."
so you PROVED BR's observation to be correct...
6.5 trading hours = 390 trading minutes
You trade 1000x or about 2.5 times per minute (every 25 seconds or so)...
So yes... It's "longer" than 11 seconds...
BR is a genius!

Lol on the parrot. I live about 3 miles south of the arctic circle, where it was 36 degrees this morning at the bus stop at 7:10 am where I was shivering my butt off in my PJs while my kids were wearing their new winter coats for the first time.
Ben - I wish I had employed that Generic Condom when I was playing with the ETF's. It wouldn't have been any more pleasant, but at least I would have had a little pretection.

This location is also known as Naperville, Illinois (Money magazine's 2nd best city for families!! woo hoo.) The real estate situation here is ... interesting. I can't really speak for the city as a whole, since Naperville is actually quite large in population (almost 150k people) and geographically (we call the south side of town Napertucky since it can take so long to drive there.) Hubby told me last night that home sales were down 7% year over year according to some Chicago publication he read yesterday though.
CV,
sometimes when people sit back and consider those types of things and realize that they have done nothing to prepare for the potential they lash out....it's like that.
isn't the other point that if none of it happens you aren't worse off? sort of along my lines of, nobody every got hurt being safe.
tradefast - spx has closed within a 7 point range over past 6 trading days -- odds are good that we hit 7 of 8 = yawn

Wilmington Trust
I found out about WT in two stages, I'm not some crack balance sheet observer but I know a little bit and how to look for a few red flags that a CFA taught me, a big client of mine called me several months ago asking about looking into buying bonds of theirs...so I took a look and got freaked out (long story), a few months after that, had a disturbing call from my buddy that works at WFC here and told me about them getting crushed by a developer at the beaches here and people bringing deposits to him....lots of deposits, and lots of loans, couple it with what I saw on the balance sheets, and the constant ads they ran all summer basically begging for desposits and it was pretty clear the jig was almost up.
I have a pretty good feel for things in my neighborhood though. The good architect seems to keep himself busy -- he is really good though. Just when I think things must be about to get really bad for him, someone comes along in the nick of time and hires him for a full tear down. We border a forest preserve on one side of the neighborhood and have a golf course in the middle, so we were ripe for the tear down frenzy. There were a few builders who went nuts buying up properties and building spec houses (McMansions). Most of them have sold...although the worst of the builders in terms of gross size and excess hasn't sold anything, and two of their four homes went into forclosure. Now they are occupied so I'm not sure exactly how that all worked out.
Seriously Karen, have we ever been right on the tape, together?
I dont think we have...
And LOL CV, on my impulsive days, I might make 20 trades, but thats only if I'm being very bad...
My best days seem to have way less trades.

@Jennifer,
I had asked b/c DR pointed out today that home sales would have been week (unexpectedly, of course) if not for the big boost out of the midwest.
Can I just say that I really miss Nic?
Cant wait until she is done with that course and can chatter again.
There are a lot of homes on the market in the neighborhood. Most sellers are still in denial and prices are only about 10-15% off their peak. There is very little demand for the properties listed above $1mm. A couple transfered in from London over the summer, husband works for E&Y, and one divorcee trying to unload her $1.4 mm albatross was devastated when they chose another home. They might have been the only $1mm buyer this year.
Mutt, better a toothbrush than a sonicare !! you were probably overdue for a fresh one.. sweet bird was looking our for your best interests, i bet.
I-man, does that mean there is hope for me yet?
Mangy Mutt
also, an interesting side note, a very wealthy woman that sits on the board of Wilmington Trust ran for office here this year, it was an odd move in many ways considering her background

Ok... getting some action...
Lets see whether or not I've been waiting in vain for this pivot... been on my radar screen all damn day.
whats wrong with sonicare, I use one?

Nic tweets, I-man.. her crackberry broke and she went off to get a new one : )
Mutt, I think my trainer would rather train traders with no brain, versus those that tend to overthink shit constantly, any day.
So yes, there is mad hope for you kid.
what does BR think about QE, I never saw him post anything or I missed it.
Maybe that's part of the "if you want to be a policy wonk" stuff....not his job.
I don't know where people are buying...but it isn't here. Briefly, back in the late spring/early summer, there was a small uptick (mostly because a few people priced realistically) and then eveyrone who had been waiting came out of the woodwork, listed their homes all at once, and it all came screeching to a halt. Shadow inventory anyone?
Karen - I never thought of it that way :)
The bird loves me - Well he can still be a Nanny Nanny Poo Poo at times.

That IS the other point... That the "preparations" are consumable...
If I buy propane gas... I'll eventually use it no matter what... Food? I'll eat... Alcohol? drink...
It's not like anything would ever get MOTHBALLED...
I think it's a lot smarter way to spend money than the $5 thousand dollars I spent in the 80's to but a brand spanking new Apple Mac II with, get this, a 40 megabyte hard drive and 2 megs of RAM...
That baby was smoking!
Of course you laugh now... But to me it's pretty retarded what people spend on phones (& phone service)...
Whizzo... $100-$200 a month just flying out the door that you'll never see again... Money that just vanishes into the atmosphere...
So, did I miss something? Gold spiked hard this morning. Did someone get some insider information about a larger than expected queasing?
Ben, I was inferring that sonicare brush heads are expensive!! and who knows the damage the bird could have done to the base.. I swear by sonicare, btw.. try one and you'll never go back to regular toothbrush.
an interesting list: http://www.fundmymutualfund.com/2010/10/50-best-performing-stocks-year-to-date.html
totally agree, I love the sonicare, but yeah, pricey, I get the heads at Kohls, they are on sale there a lot.
my wifes uncle was a developer for it, they are working on a new one, it's just a mouthpiece with brushes on the inside, you put it in your mouth, close your mouth for two minutes open back up, rinse, done.
you know, if it's all a dollar story, you'd think stocks be showing a little more juice to the upside today
McF, this whole move higher since 1pm est looks shady as shit to me...
yep, I agree, I'm holding overnight, trading my plan.
Ben, if your wife doesn't have the clarisonic plus.. get her one for christmas.. i swear by that thing, too..

I'm dying for the "Opal" now.. working on getting the best price, of course.
ben, at 3:18, exactly.. and crude is still lagging as well.. i'm a dollar bull unless uup 22.35 breaks. $copper a weakie today, too..
maybe buying your wife a skincare tool is a no-no.. better yet, buy if for yourself (in gray!) and your beautiful new face will be your gift to your wife.

Wheres LB?
i have never seen anything like this in my life: C on a ten min candle chart over the last 2 days, especially.
i am actually very scared now.. if they can do that to C.. what can they do to the entire market.
Ben (3:08) - Like Cvienne and I have pointed out, BR will tell you what he thinks about QE after the fact.
He of course will be right.

really need to take a hard look at COT for the dollar over the weekend, little concerned all the big volume was so the insties could sell more

How come when I wake up I'm in such a good mood, and then by the time the bell rings I'm ready to punch Bernanke?
well, while I'm looking forward to tomorrow, i think we all know what really matters is next week next Friday is also New Moon.
This hurts.

Is there a rule about how to trade trendlines that get broken for a couple of minutes and then recaptured? For example, SPX hourly -- trendline down from 1196.14 through this morning's 10 am candle, perfect stop at end of day, except for that 9:30 brief piercing.
I love footie pjs, my little guy still wears them. It will be sad when he figures out about blankets.

Trendlines get plenty of headfakes. The question is was it a solid break or just a test?
"Dow recovers all but 17 points of 74-point slide; 3M is laggard, down 6%"
Will wonders never cease?!
Rule #1. Buy the dips.
Rule #2. Buy what you hate.
okay, i will stop being silly and go to the beach.. maybe maybe make a margarita to go?
Man, exiting my gold long two days ago looks dumb. The only good thing about it is that I was able to use some tax losses from earlier in the year to offset that gain. No way I'm getting back in the gold trade here.
Cash is like a warm blanket.
I did pretty well this month with VLCCF (my shipper that I mentioned buying on Oct. 6). I'm still long at the moment.
I shorted some TOT 55 calls a while back. I need those to fold under next month to cover.
In the comments at Mish, someone made the point (obvious, but I hadn't really thought about it yet) that only the best loans are buying down principal, so the remaining loans become riskier almost by definition. Also, if you have a mortgage at 4 or 5%, and you have the cash, maybe "cash in" is a good use of funds since there aren't many investments out there that pay much more than that without big risk. Not sure how the interest rate deduction offsets that though.
k -
are these numbers off google correct for c's volume? Vol / Avg. 239.44M/535.56B? should that be an M rather than a B?
even to my inexpert eye the jiggedly lines on the c charts for the last few days look wrong, just plain wrong.
@ Jenn
I had to get over my TL addiction... hopefully there is a Gann support group nearby that can help you.
You'll never worry about a broken TL again.
:)
The key for I-Man was internalizing that the market is never linear, hence, the fallacy of imposing a TL on it.
bat.. avg 10 day volume for C stand at 639,880,419.. there have been some 1B plus days tho.. the week of 11-15 had two..
i have today's volume at 258,615,731

Jennifer - Yes the footies Pj's are great, but VERYdifficult to find in adult size.
My Neaderthal looking neighboor laughs at me when I wear them outside, but that's ok, cuz he is too stupid not to know you shouldn't drive a car without oil. (I do not know how many negatives I put in that sentence, but I am sure it will turn out right)
Anyway, sometime the plastic in the bottom cracks and my big toe sticks out and gets cold.
But I have found it is NOT a good idea to use staples to fix them.
