The Celtics exposed every bit of the "Dream Team" weakness 88-80 last night in the Garden
What is it with America's fascination with the concept of a "dream team"?... A collection of self proclaimed righteous individuals who band together and think they can beat back humanity by the simple virtue that they enjoy playing together, and perceive their cause to be just...
Here are some famous DREAM TEAMS in recent memory...
(2008)
Obama Names his Economic "Dream" Team
Which morphed into a nightmare...
Obama's Recovery Summer
I suppose the problem is, we're all just too pessimistic, or impatient... In 2008, Americans were bored and impatient, and wanted "change"... That dream team didn't work, so now are you telling me that they want this?
What, in fact, do they want? What should they do? Who should they BELIEVE in?
CV says that the BELIEVING should start with believing in yourself (& that DOESN'T mean the belief in yourself that is simply "gifted" by what society gives you, or "layered on" to you because you've wedged yourself into a little security blanket existence where things are done by committee rather than ingenuity)... If you are incapable of doing that (believing you can accomplish things ON YOUR OWN - if put to the test), then you're hardly going to be equipped to have the creativity to choose a representative government that is satisfactory... If "choosing" a government, as a way of life, is even your thing...
Further on the Celtic topic... Other CELTIC legends and myths come to mind here...
Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man, that he didn't already have...
Sometimes late when things are real And people
share the gift of gab between themselves
Some are quick to take the bait And catch
the perfect prize that waits among the shelves
But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man
That he didn't, didn't already have
And Cause never was the reason for the evening
Or the tropic of Sir Galahad.
So please believe in me...
As for Sir Galahad himself... Well, in his journey (whereby he managed to catch that "perfect prize"), it was mostly just he & his horse anyway...
The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And the perfect disguise above
Under the cities
Lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love
---
"Night after night your horse treads down alone
The sere damp fern, night after night you sit
Holding the bridle like a man of stone,
Dismal, unfriended: what thing comes of it?"
Sir Galahad, a Christmas Mystery

You probably know that "Sumerian" epochs were vastly removed from Neanderthal ones...
Also - there is anecdotal evidence that the Neanderthals were, in fact, superior in intellect to "Cro Magnon" Man (who they were displaced by)...
Once again tho... the "squeaky wheel" or "groupthink" dynamic eventually asserted itself in that resolution...
Leftback - At this point, I am not sure what is more comforting.
DL, letting me know I have to be even poorer then I am now to get SS
Or knowing you got longer this morning....
I will go with DL

Anon.. I cannot at this moment grasp everything you are putting forth.. and I see a lot that I agree with.. But, I do not see how hedgefund, especially, can be publicly traded.. the logic escapes me. And, as for a GS, the conflict of interest is astonishingly obvious.
There go the stops... lets see if the surprise is next, or if our friend Cold gets to play...
@I-Man
I see a price channel... (after the stops)...
same one that was in play after yesterdays bear flag...
CV still says we make a lower print on the WEEKLY candle...
Anon @ 2:35.. interesting point regarding the one benefit of taking SS away from the federal government's coffers.. I am wondering where they $$ would come from to take it private anyway?! oh, yeah.. just 1s and 0s in our digital world..
Just a little bit more... and I'm throwing a punch.
I still want to see some leverage come outta this market by today's close.
I got my number...
Cvienne - My neighbor looks like a Neanderthal and he ain't too bright either, I will take him a box of rocks to see if he can sort them by color.
Once again tho... the "squeaky wheel" or "groupthink" dynamic eventually asserted itself in that resolution...
So does that mean that "groupthink" is a fundamental basis of our society?
If it is groupthink that assersts itself, then wouldn't the groupthink want to have others represent them?
If not then wouldn't the squeaky wheel be making the rules?
Mangy Mutt
Actually, the SS problem is not hard to fix. It was started by throwing money in one big pot and taking money back out later from one big pot. Pure simple-minded government schlock.
Continue social security, but keep individual accounts. Like IRA's, we even let you see how your Social Security "investment" is doing on line. Some vig will go to disability, etc.., but on the whole if Joe Leftback contributes and keeps up with his funds, a lot less easy to waste it....
If there is the political will to change it, it would soon cease to be the enormous drag it has become...
@karen (2:44)
"taking SS away from the federal government's "coffers"?"...
better ask LBJ where, exactly, what that "coffer" is (and where the key to it can be found)...
So when does T+3 commence?
And I know you realize giving you a SS number does not in any fashion mean an individual account...

That's understandable, really, given how long LB is today.
Looks like LB called it on the Cold Steel front again.
CV, I've been harping on the weekly candles since before Tuesdays close!
My current FAV is FXA on the weekly.. either it's to be the new world reserve currency or it has seen its day in the sun.. looks similar to last 3 weekly FXE candles, btw.. imagine that! LOL
Of course, plot one, plot them all.. whatever..
CV, did you watch the Barbara Boxer spoof I posted?? I missed your comment if you did..
Yeah, but I got my 10 ticks... not the 25 I'd hoped for though...
@Mutt
In summary:
- I was making a reference to the fact that popular thought has "Neanderthals" as being stupid (when they may have actually possessed more "compassionate" traits than Cro-Magnons)
- Cro Magnon is acknowledged to be, however, the next link in the evolutionary process
- I did not say anything about "groupthink" as being a fundamental basis of out society (or not)... I simply said that when I see it, I don't generally like it...
- I don't like it because WHEN IT DOES assert itself, it appears, to me, to be a self fulfilling entity, which TO ME, stifles creativity because it invites COMPROMISES...
- The idea of "compromise" isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I'd prefer to task the INDIVIDUAL with the decision to compromise for the greater good (seeing that it was in his best interests to do so), rather than try to have compromise FORCED upon him... Then "compromise" fits into a natural evolutionary process, and is not an artificial construct set forth in the name of facilitating homogenization...
@karen
I clicked on it (the Boxer thing), but it was only a short blurb...
I was waiting for some video to load (or something more)... There was a tab to click for a longer version, but when I did so, nothing happened...
two other great charts on the daily: $wlsh and $tran

PIMCO - Gross: Quantitative easing isn’t a be-all end-all solution, but an adrenalin shot aimed at raising asset prices & rejuvenating the economy.
Me- How does raising crude, gold, copper, ag, rejuvenate the economy!! LOL

Trader Mark is your ex- already? How about Einhorn?
Wow, you really burn through them, baby. Luckily, LB stays true to his <3's desire, angel...
I'm so livid.. People are getting into the Buy Risk Trade. Is the Fed targeting an SPX level?! Janjuah clearly thinks it's true.. Yeah, but they won't admit it.. where is our transparency!!! (from Janjuah video.)
Janjuah is waiting for 1220.. this could be good if we don't get there.
Have we learned nothing?? (love that question)
@karen (3:08)
I agree ONLY with the title... "Electric Cars Could Flop"...
It has less to do with the three points they tackled...
1. Price of Oil
2. Price point of technology
3. Government incentives
It has EVERYTHING to do with the ability to handle an energy infrastructure for mass fleets...
I went over this concept IN DETAIL many months ago (the amount of gigawatts we're talking about)...
It's a CANARD... (as most things are)...
---
I'll let the other "smart" bloggeteers (around the known universe) spend electrons debating the merits...
I'm probably too DUMB to handle their reasoning...
I just know that if you're planning a wedding reception for 300 guests, it's a waste of time deciding which of the 10 hors d-ouvres you should serve if you're only capable of producing 20 of them in aggregate...
You might have to go with a pretzel bowl in the end...
We can make a story where ten year yields can be 1% or 8%.. but we are certain they won't be where they are now..
@I-Man
Rejected RIGHT ON cv's price channel (from yesterdays bear flag)...
"Quantitative easing isn’t a be-all end-all solution, but an adrenalin shot aimed at raising asset prices & rejuvenating the economy."

What about my stamp collection & baseball cards? Howz about giving them a little boost?

Yeah, and then gunned, deliberately...

An 8% 10y is totally off the table, the entire world of debt would blow up. Those hyperinflation scenarios are the least likely eventuality.
what pumped GS, pray tell?? up over 2pts..
Heh heh
LB.. I think you got the point on the ten year tho.. and I think i'm changing my stripes from bond bull to bear.. those charts are something else.. Time to fight the Fed or give it up to gold..
Fuck the Fed.
Karen,
For the moment LB is a bond bear, except for junk and exotics, where I think we will continue to see a FED-inspired spread tightening.
The Fed doesn't really want you in Ts here, they want you out further along the risk curve, so by selling Ts you are not fighting the Fed.
I-Man
1-0.
As we say back home, like.
teflon market! LOL..
You got to be effing kidding me?
Super ball market.. the harder you throw it down the higher it bounces!
I knew I should've taken the rest of the week off!
Whores! Greedy whores!
I'm ready to go all-in on QE, btw.. but it won't be into over-valued paper.. it will be into hard assets.. commodities and real money, gold. Ditto to I-Man at 3:51.
Sorry to be obnoxious. It's the weakness in Treasuries that is a big player in market dynamics.
We were in and out of TLT in an hour today... LB never stays less than an hour, Karen. One must have staying power...
Cvienne (2:59) – That was also my take on, your reference to Neanderthals, I was simply saying (And if you met him you would agree) that my neighbor looks like a Neaderthal.
However you can easily see how reading the statement; “Once again tho... the "squeaky wheel" or "groupthink" dynamic eventually asserted itself in that resolution...” does sound like you are saying, Groupthink asserted (ie declared) itself in that resolution (ie motion).
So I did NOT read it as you saying, you generally don’t like it (Groupthink) – But thank you for clearing that up.
I agree that compromise is not a bad thing, families, friends, co-works, hell even when we drive on the streets, we need to facilitate compromise. It helps society function as a whole.
I would also agree that tasking the individual to compromise could lead to the greater good. The Native Americans do this all the time, but it also, means things get done at a snails pace (Maybe that is good maybe not)
But if there is only one entity that makes the rules, then there how can there be room for compromise?

Look no further.
;-)
How can the bond market retain its intelligence when its full of fucking idiots?
Look on the bright side...
UUP still over 22.60...
(Not you Leftback)
Please, please.. look at the last week of sept weekly spx candle and the last week of oct (unfinished) spx candle.. you think it is gonna play out the same??
"But if there is only one entity that makes the rules, then there how can there be room for compromise?"
---
Easy answer...
at this blog... CV essentially makes the rules (yet there are always TONS of compromises that end up flowing forth with respect to comments & rebuttals)...
At other blogs... There are COMPROMISERS at the helm...
And what do they do?
They attempt to "shoo-away" opinions that their so-called "band of compromisers" add to the mix...
Look at how people BEHAVE (not what they SAY they're all about)...
No worries, the I-

CV @ 4:08.. in other words.. actions speak louder than words!
DL, perhaps you need to move..
@karen (4:03)
Hope not (or "so", since, at least the next weeks candle printed a little lower)...
I'm still hanging on to a few shorts that I'm flat on...
If this thing IS going to go higher, I'd like a chance to at least make some beer money before it does...
Until I have a better week picking NFL games (which means that JACKSONVILLE & the 49ERS need to get on BYE WEEKS asap)...
@karen (4:08)
yes
and to add to that... I can tolerate liberal POV's (I actually have many myself)...
It's difficult to tolerate hypocrisy... Not that I'm not guilty of it from time to time... It's hard to avoid in an overall sense... But i do my best...
fantastic chart! (sorry, i need to curb my wild enthusiasm : )
http://www.bespokeinvest.com/thinkbig/2010/10/27/680-days-and-counting.html
CV.. hypocrisy is easier to tolerate than outright lying, don't you think? and sometimes, a person is truly unaware of their hypocrisy.. especially on environmental issues.. where the unkowns are not within grasp. (an extra simple case in point, disposable diapers vs cotton diapers.. or paper bags vs. plastic bags. on the latter, i solved it by using age old, heavy duty, canvas bags, that I wash with my regular laundry : )
gotta go peeps...
go bucky!
@karen
gotta go...
But a person who IS IGNORANT of their hypocrisy probably falls into a category of someone who formulates opinions without thinking out matters in depth...
In that case, I'd excuse them from the "hypocrite" tag, and probably just label them an imbecile... :-)
really gotta go!
Cvienne - The 49ers need to finish the rest of their games on a bye season.
And fire Singltary.
Mangy Mutt
Cvienne (4:08) - My bad, I thought we were discussing social concepts. Not blog policies or how they are/are not run.
But I guess that does reflect back to the earlier discussion on BR and how he is moding commintators at TBP.
On the other hand I think society in general should be more represntative in nature.
Mangy Mutt
Cvienne - I know you had to go so hopefully you will get this later.
(4:23)But a person who IS IGNORANT of their hypocrisy probably falls into a category of someone who formulates opinions without thinking out matters in depth...
Agreed that is why having open discussions are so important.
Thanks
Mangy Mutt
@Mutt Just who do you think the reference to ibices was directed at.
GO AWAY!!!
The QE2 Bond Report 10.27.10
More weakness in fixed income land today as a rather horrid 5y auction was met with limited enthusiasm by weary punters. Once again, HY led the pack with IG and the entire Treasury complex in the rear, and a steepener that began in the morning continued into the close after a little interruption as equities sold off in the early going. A 7y auction tomorrow.
Corpies: LQD -0.26%; AGG -0.19%; JNK -0.03%; HYG -0.11%;
Govies: TLT -0.88%; IEI -0.30%; TIP -0.62%
Hedgies: TBT 1.70%
We had a little dip into the long bond this morning at 9.55am and were out again by noon for a tiny profit as some equity punters piled in for a bit until the auction rendered the complex inedible. Can't win 'em all. We remain involved in high yield only here, and will hedge rate risk here and there until such time as Treasuries offer a decent risk/reward or spreads come in to ridiculously tight levels.
We'll see how the market opens in the morning. Today's close had the feel of a fairly strong reversal, we will see if Asian markets and FX traders pick up on that overnight.
LB will be up early and will try not to crow too loudly if they do.
STUPID DOG (4:46) - Cvienne, has always (IMHO) been forthcoming, if he thought I was an imbecil (And by the way, you um spelled it wrong... Just say'n)or acting as one, I do not believe he would make a veiled attempt at it, instead he would come out as say so.
Mangy Mutt
@Mutt
I don't know who "STUPID DOG" is because I was at the gym at (4:46)...
But anyway... The "curiosity" you exude naturally and expressly precludes you from being considered an imbecile...
Now - I'm moving on to Amen Ra's thread (and drinking beer and watching the World Series)...
& by the way... despite the 49ers 1-6 start... I'm NOT of the mind that Singletary should be fired...
He is actually one of the coaches in the NFL that I TRULY admire and I think they'll find a way to get it together...
I haven't written them (or him) off yet...
Actually - my high opinion of Mike Singletary goes beyond football... I'd rather be "like" him (in many ways), than criticize him...
Cvienne - I hope you get this, I do not want to carry this on to Amen's Post.
I know that is not how you roll, so it never even crossed my mind. Nuff said on that.
As far as Singletary goes though (I don't mind talking FooseBall on Amen's post though) he was a great player and I think he has a great defensive mind. Maybe not fired, but moved to Defensive coordinator.
Goodness sakes, even Dalles has a better record then them, oh wait they DON'T have a better record, well at least Dalles has John Kitna...

Yeah, but those people deserve it!
Anyway. Okay, CV. We both said our thing.
@wunsa
Just remember... a LOT of good things come from thrashing, bashing, and mashing...
beer & whiskey... for example...
I'm not against it... EVER... Especially when it's directed towards me...
It's the only way to find out your true essence...
