Morning Audibles - 9.16.10

Random stuff this morning for this OPEX Thursday...

Geithner Says U.S. Examining Ways to Push China on Yuan Rise

"The U.S. yesterday filed a pair of complaints against its second-largest trading partner with the World Trade Organization, and lawmakers facing elections in November are introducing measures allowing companies to pursue sanctions against China for its currency stance..."

Busy guy, that TG... Here he was earlier in the day explaining how to avoid the "double dip"...

NO DOUBLE DIP

Nice to see he's on the same page with his boss...

Obama Turns Focus to Trade as Way to Encourage Economic Growth

"The report recommends the government increase the number trade missions and step up promotion abroad, increase financing for the purchase of U.S. exports and finish work on pending free trade accords with South Korea, Colombia and Panama.

Friction With China

The advisory group didn’t address the value of China’s currency, which labor unions and some lawmakers argue is a barrier to U.S. exports and job growth..."

Let me get this straight... We're AT ODDS with China on currency manipulation, and will probably start mouthing off about TARIFFS, yet we want to pursue FREE TRADE agreements so as to "double exports"... Did I get that right?

Oh, and what's on the table, (to "step up" exports), is to "increase financing for the purchase of U.S. exports"... Yeah sure... That strategy worked real well for LUCENT... Anybody remember them?

If not, I'm sure many will remember this...

But my question is... Why all the fuss?... I mean, weren't we FORCE FED a trillion dollar stimulus package at the beginning of this Administration (along with countless programs called, "Cash for Clunkers", "tax credits on homes", foreclosure relief, shovel ready jobs, extended unemployment benefits, bailouts, guarantees, backstops), hell, we even got a bump by employing census workers... We should be in the clear by now, right?

Where did all the money go? Where are all the jobs created?

Umm... Not HERE I guess...

FedEx Reports Profit That Trails Estimates, Announces Job Cuts

FedEx Corp., the second-largest U.S. package-shipping company, forecast earnings for the current quarter that fell short of analysts’ estimates, and said it will eliminate 1,700 jobs...

I suppose there's only one thing left to do... Just pump it into the stock market... Hell - EASY AL even said over this past summer that he'd be on board with that... Anything... Anything at all to cover up this mess...

Retirement on Hold: American Workers $6 Trillion Short

This comes amid recent reports indicating that a White House-created panel is considering proposals to cut Social Security benefits and raise the retirement age.

But CV is WAY too 'pessimistic', right?... My biggest problem, obviously, is that I don't see the POWER that these "behind the scenes" lever pullers actually possess... I mean hell... You can see it in STOCK PRICES right? The stock market is going up so the economy must be fine... THINK PINK (I oughta)...

Excuse me, but until I see some real acknowledgement of the problems, all I see is this...

I mean, seriously, this is some crazy sh*t going on.

I feel like eating a bag of shrooms and just looking at the charts. I guarantee you after 20 minutes those triangles will start dancing because they are EVERYWHERE.

Jaime and Lloyd, enough already you sick bastards!

@karen (3:51)

Well I can say this... As evidenced in the first video in this thread... We DO KNOW that Timmy G. is standing vigilant against the "double dip"...

I-Man said...

Hey, I never said anyone should or shouldnt do anything...

I simply asked if those who eat meat kill the animal themselves...

Key distinction there, Survivor.

I-Man said...

I just think alot more folks would CHOOSE to not eat meat, if they had to kill the animal with their own hands...

Just a hunch.

Worked for me, and I used to eat meat every day.

I-Man said...

Just FOOD for thought...

CV said...

@I-Man

Answer: yes (in some cases - not all)...

and furthermore - If it came down to not being able to get food at a supermarket or distribution center...

and all it was was myself, on a farm, with a few head of cattle, and a family to feed...

It wouldn't bother me much...

Anybody fish?... Anybody go crabbing? Toss lobsters into a pot?

Same thing...

CV said...

Furthermore...

Plants are LIVING things too...

You're KILLING them by uprooting and eating them... Just saying...

Sure... Most will die anyway... But so will animals... and so will humans...

It's all just various aggregates & assemblies of atoms & molecules...

CV said...

The atoms & molecules, themselves, don't die...

I-Man said...

Agreed...

CV said...

ATOMS for thought...

karen said...

not really a big move in ORCL after all..

i've killed a deer before that I ate, never a cow though or a chicken.

karen,

re: distribution

do you follow lowry's at all? they say we have accumulation, I respect them, and this confuses me because it's a direct contrast to all the buy climaxes that investers intel says we are getting.

thoughts?

I've been meaning to write frizz and ask her about this as I know she follows Lowry's closely and has for longer than me.

McFearless said...

i would have no problem killing a chicken and plucking it if I needed to though, cows I would probably skip anyway if I had to hunt for my own food all the time, id' probably stick to small game/birds/rabbits, etc.

McFearless said...

$TRAN didn't have a very good day at all, old man russell will talk about that tonight for sure.

karen said...

Ben, I do not follow lowry's.. but color me confused..

and read this: ...when the market moves higher and higher, stocks make new highs, and more new highs, and then ... more new highs.

What if that wasn't happening?

Well, new highs continue on up higher because investors are chasing particular stocks. If investors aren't chasing stocks, then that says there is a reluctance about the perceived future of the stock(s) being considered.

So, if New Highs weren't moving higher and higher, then that would be a "red flag" that something wasn't quite right.

Today's New Highs chart is below, and it is showing some pretty poor action. Normally, the blue bars continue up, higher and higher in an up trend signifying that stocks are being chased by investors ... and that is a good sign.

@I-Man

Don't take anything I say as some kind of BACKLASH to your comments...

I don't mean to sound that way at all...

I'm just making a reasonable assessment of human genetics and the human condition...

Humans have sets of teeth that tell you we've evolved as MEAT EATERS...

That doesn't mean that we have to be STUPID about it and breed massive amounts of livestock to feed our fat faces (in the way the global economy has emerged)... You've heard me HARSHLY criticize that notion as well...

In fact - as you might be able to gather by my described habits & lifestyle...

I fancy a world that acts as sort of a world of SMALL VILLAGES (not mega-countries)...

Places where one could be held accountable for something... In those small spaces, the raising of small herds & eventual killing of animals (for food), would naturally be the way things were done... As well as everything else...

In any case, if OUR LEADERS keep us on the present course... I have no doubt that my envisioned world will come about sooner or later...

I'll miss the fantasy football tho... :-)

@ i
"How many folks that eat meat have ever killed a chicken or cow with their own hands and watched it die?"
my daughter who became a vegetarian at age 8, recently (at age 20) informed me that she would eat chicken or any other meat as long as she saw it raised (as in raise it ourselves) or shot it inthe wild. told she would have to help slaughter and butcher, she was cool with that.

Nic said...

I-Man
I would prefer to eat something I had raised and killed myself. I would know it had a good life and died humanely.

Nic said...

The way we raise and dispatch animals in big agriculture is not good. For them or us.

CV said...

@karen (4:22)

My KISS take on that is that it's all going to play out correctly in due time...

Market nowhere to go?: CORRECT
Correction coming?: PROBABLY CORRECT

When?: WHO KNOWS

When I'm faced with a thousand variables like that, I just look at it as a math problem where you have numerators on top of denominators...

The first exercise in algebraic expression is to CANCEL OUT... Then you see it expressed in simple terms...

72bat said...

oh, and so she waits until age 20 to tell me? shite, we could've had a flock in the backyard the whole time and pastured a steer in the field across the road.

CV said...

@Nic

I'll say this for the "n"-illionth time...

The PROBLEM that we have in this world isn't that we "kill animals inhumanely"...

Instead - the PROBLEM is that human civilization has evolved in such a disorganized and messy way, than we hardly have a choice BUT to kill animals that way to SERVICE the RIDICULOUS demands...

ANSWER?

Less HUMANS - Less Global distribution and service needs and mechanisms...

Instead? TPTB want MORE GROWTH (and attempted "fixes" to these little offshoots of service INFRASTRUCTURE...

On the other hand... Sharks have been an evolutionary species for much longer than humans have...

I doubt they give much thought to they way they treat their prey...

What's the difference? I doubt humans are any more intelligent than sharks (or dolphins)... So the DIFFERENCE is, sharks eat what they kill, and don't bother with trying to raise their prey...

I suppose opposable THUMBS are the problem... :-)

Karen,

4:22, yes, that's along the lines of what Joe Granville is saying lately, he thinks for sure the top was put in back in April, this is the guy that started the on balance volume studies.

First off I would like to say excellent blog! I had a quick question
that I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I have had trouble clearing my mind in getting my ideas out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips? Thank you!
