Morning Audibles 9.23.10

Yesterday, somehow some malicious software got itself into my computer operating system so I had to go the NUCLEAR OPTION route and reformat my hard drive...

That's why I'm kind of out of pocket here as I'm re-assembling the pieces... Be back soon...

Well, my YM completion target just got hit... should be a covering fest into the close.

POMOs only affect the Treasury markets directly. Their effects on other markets are delayed and diffused.

A POMO is actually bond positive and initially equity negative as everyone wants to front run the Fed entry to the Treasury market.

I agree that EUR weakness, USD and JPY firmness can continue here.

CV said...

@McF

There isn't as much volume as I'd like to see...

So I'd agree with you...

McFearless said...

lefty, the claims about POMO have been, without a doubt, that money then is used to lever up into stocks, Zero Hedge started the love affair with the POMO and they were the first to make the claims

I'll go back and map but I believe the results have been just as choppy in bond during pomo's

the real questiona bout this in my mind is when does all the settlement take place for this?

do they have special rules?....nobody knows but "them"

Lately, SPX seems to like to leave GAPS at these important FIBO numbers...

It could happen tomorrow as 1121 is one of them...

McFearless said...

and yes, who is going to hold anything going into the weekend?

McFearless said...

guys, look at the transports

there is major trouble in dow theory land right now

McFearless said...

is that a warning for a big red body like lefty just brought up?

Very weak covering, not many shorts operating...
Or just big ones with massive balls.

I-Man said...

Karen's going to be pissed she missed this...

Leftback said...

LB's best guess for tomorrow.

Nasty durables data. Elevator down at the open to 1110-1115, then after new homes, we have a slide into the KT area (1097-1105) by noon.

Game over, shorts cover and go home and in comes the cavalry at the close, or on Monday.

Leftback said...

"Karen's going to be pissed she missed this..."

According to her own admission she should be in complete ecstasy.
Market below 1127.

Wonder if that's allowed at John Wayne Airport?

Leftback said...

A look at credit suggests this is a correction and not a meltdown.
HY was fairly solid today.

Momos to return on Monday or Tuesday.

McFearless said...

this may simply be some sort of B wave up in TLT, with a C down still to come.

Leftback said...

No late buying of Ts to speak of. Might see a bit of that overnight if the Asian and European markets sell off.

Lefty,

Last week you mentioned that you were long equities...I assume that is no longer the case?

CV,

when do the trades show up on the rosters in fantasy?

I think this was the first trade I made through yahoo.

things that make think - hmmmmm

72bat said...

make you think

CV said...

@McF

There's usually a 2 day wait from when the trade is accepted...

That's so people can VOTE on it (and/or the "commish" to VETO it)...

But I see no problem with the trade... (as that clause is usually only to prevent SQUAD DUMPING or collusion towards the end of the season...

If I see it's still pending on Saturday, I can manually get in there and force the roster switch - so don't worry, you'll have your roster ready by Sunday...

B in T:

Lefty is 25% long equities and is hedging his book with shorts this week. We are 10% long JNK/HYG, 10% AGG and 4% LQD. We own no Treasuries. Our plan is to exit LQD and AGG progressively on strength in bonds and to short TLT.

Roughly half of the equity exposure is single high dividend paying stocks, the rest are index ETFs like SPY, EEM etc.

So we are slightly more defensive than TWSWB but more aggressive than many at this point. Our rationale is similar to that advanced by many.

The argument is simple. The FED is pumping liquidity, yet there is no inflation. Absent a complete deflationary collapse, if markets are sideways then we will make our dividends and we are laughing. If inflation gets going, equities may also gain in value.

McFearless said...

thanks man, figured it was fine, I think that was a pretty even trade, doubt anyone would have a problem with it.

those are interesting charts by KD

reminded me of all the calls I've seen on the boards lately about Apple or the market, terms I haven't seen since 07, like:

"there is no doubt that the market will be higher by year end"

there is always doubt

period

CV said...

Yeah... more of a window dressing trade...

not really a blockbuster...

Thx, man! Loved me some Cartwright... he was always the one to turn in a good hard bruising run to pull skins fans back from utter devastation the past few years it seems.

I'll always love Rock Cartwright for that.

Hopefully Donny Mac will keep our chin up on offense now, and we wont need that anymore.

Gotta go pack for the wknd excursion down to the jungles of socal...

Thx again for all the bday wishes, and catch yall on monday, enjoy the games.

Remember, Arkansas over Bama in a thriller...

That was succinct and lucid, Lefty.

..What happened?

mcHAPPY said...

I'm totally confused right now.

I still very much like the leading diagonal off April 26th. It fits all the criteria and there are some Fibo connections in the charts since then.

I still think we are in minor 2 working on minute iv of C or finishing up Y of a triple of some sort.

CV is going to make an EARLY prognostication for Sunday's games...

In week 4 (next week), the teams with a BYE are:

Minnesota
Tampa Bay
Kansas City
Dallas

Teams "going in" to a BYE week often play well (because it's hateful to sit out two weeks after losing)...

Both Dallas & Minny were considered PLAYOFF teams that ended up starting the season 0-2...

Look for them to play their asses off...

KC started 2-0, but has to play SF (who started 0-2)... Normally, SF would "blow them out", but it may end up being tight... I'll lean towards SF winning...

Tampa plays Pittsburgh (who is VERY FORTUNATE to have started 2-0) and is on it's 3rd QB of the season before Big Ben comes back...

The Steelers may be "looking past" this game to the Ravens next week...

Tampa Bay OVER the Steelers may be the upset of the week...

I think MINN is gonna kill it this week, look for my TE to have a TD, or two.

McFearless said...

doesn't seem like the market gave bears too much to be excited about today karen

there are a few things here and there, but I can find something that says we have to go higher for each of those.

CV said...

@McF @karen

I still say we print a little lower tomorrow...

I'll put up an AH "screen shot" here in a minute to illustrate why...

But you're right... SPY volume ought to have been heavier...

CV said...

It's a little noisy, but here goes...

new chart in thread

You have to understand a couple of things...

- The ganns from the top were done from high prints (it's hard to see in the snapshot

- Today's AH print (at 4:04) went to a 50% retrace from Tuesday's high to todays open... Giving it a POTENTIAL look of an ABC down...

- The extension to that (at 423.8%) would take you right down to where the rally began (back at 1040)...

- This gives it the "look" that we might be on day 4 of a little "throwover" (and that the apex of that wedge would take us back down around 1097...

However, a case could also be made that we're concluding the "correction" off a different gann line... So it's hard to say...

The fact that UPPER numbers were printed in the AH, though, leads me to think we might be going lower... The OPPOSITE is usually the case when we go higher (and you can see many of those instances in the yellow areas during the rally)...

So my WILD GUESS is that we get some "surprise surprise" bad news in Asia or Europe overnight...

My 2 cents...
