Morning Audibles 7.15.10 - The Beatings Will Continue (redux)

Another bad night for BUCKY...

---(from ZH)---
John R Taylor Jr.
Chief Investment Officer

"This week, the US equity market is starting its quarterly earnings ritual and the odds favor a strong performance for the closely followed investor favorites. Although the game is rigged as almost 50% of the corporate managements have adjusted their guidance in the past month trying to lower analysts’ projections down to levels that the companies know they can beat. Despite the opera buffa quality of the process, the S&P 500 companies will still produce a dramatic increase in earnings over the second quarter of 2009. The same can be said of the major European corporations. The increase in corporate earnings and the projection of further increases seems to be universal, and many argue that the positive outlook for thousands of individual companies must sum to an impressive economic recovery."

---

What appears quite obvious, to CV, in the first few days of Q310 is the same phenomenon which occurred in Q210, Q110, Q409, Q309, Q209...

1. Ramp up equities in the first few trading weeks of the quarter to make your quarterly nut. (If you'd have bought SPX 1010, you'd be up almost 8%)...
2. Slowly distribute those winnings into something relatively safe & liquid for the rest of the quarter. Start with the 3 b's... "bills, bonds, bucky"...
3. Get out of dodge & window dress the last 6 weeks...
4. Indulge yourself in some other "b's... (babes, bikinis, & blow)...

It's still early in Q310... We're just getting to the post FASB bank "earnings" sham, and the high profile tech earnings (whose "guidance", on the conference calls, is always highly correlated to the notion of a weak dollar)...

So in a macro sense, (despite CV's overall BULLISHNESS on the dollar), give it a few more days to get bucky as cheap as possible for the the alpha-dogs to buy at a discount...

then get themselves off to the Hamptons for the rest of the summer and share stories about their mastery of the universe...

You guys need to go by a doctor's office and see how things are run. Such babies....

Today we let go one of our two medical imaging technicians. Our cardiologist fees were cut 35% January 1st by medicare, and the reimbursement for the actual nuclear scans was cut too, not just the technical component.

The salt mine is downsizing. The people that are left are going to make a good salary with good benefits, but they will have to do more work. All have been asked, and all are willing to do so. In 12 months, we will have 25% fewer employees.

Patients will wait longer for specialized tests, but we were already the fastest turnaround in the area, so they don't have much choice. Other miners in the area and hospitals are doing exactly the same thing.

If you want to spend less on health care, you have lived long enough to see it. I hope you like it.

truthfully- I am all over the map on the health care issue- I for one was happy the way it was-

I wonder if LB took out one of those cheap policies at the airport before his trip and made SURVIVOR CAPITAL the beneficiary...

McFearless said...

but on other things you are right...if you smoke and don't disclose it, no payment for you...of course, they'd have likely caught that during underwriting anyway

so here's a story, my second year doing this I rec'd two 20 year term policies for a young married couple, $500k for one and I think it was $350k for the other.

Got a call from the underwriter a few days after the nurse went to clients house....she says to me

Your clients tested positive for cocaine, they are denied.

I call the client, explain to them what happened, and they are in complete denial, no way...wife says to me "my house would be cleaner if I did coke"

so I call underwriter back, tell her clients say no way, what can we do. Underwriter says we can pull their hair and run a more specific test for the drugs, and if that comes back positive they have to pay for the test and they still can't have the policy.

Call the client and exlain this to them...after a little bit of silence..."we don't want the policies anymore"

hahaha

another thing, if you are about to go through underwriting, don't be a moron and drink wine before you do it...have had that happen several times...elevated liver enzymes...huge rating on the policy...people flip out and all because of their own stupidity.

exactly- however- if you don't disclose and they find out you were an avid skydiver- and die in a skydiving accident- than no payout

another story, if anyone cares, I have tons for insurance:

Ben, what if I smoked one time in college, I mean, that was 15 years ago, do I need to put that down....

me....no, it's probably fine to leave it off

silence for a bit, I keep seeing him staring at the question, his face is getting red

Ben, alright, I smoked about a month ago at a party...

I just started laughing

here's one question on the app:

During the past five years have you:

flown, or do you contemplate flying as a pilot, sutdent pilot or crew member

Participated in or do you contemplate participating in motorcycle riding, racing (auto, snowmobile, motorcycle, boat), skin/scuba diving, skydiving, hanggliding, or other similar activities.

arbitrage789 said...

Even if you "don't inhale", the cocaine could still show up in a hair test (if you're hanging around other crack smokers).

McFearless said...

"I wonder how much "fun-employment money" is going to weed, blow, and pills each week"

I sued to think it was encouraged when I first started...all my college friends getting drug tests at their new jobs...not so much in finance world.

contemplate participating

kind of a catch-all there- right ben?

CV said...

"hanging around other crack smokers" is probably a RISK CATEGORY all by itself...

72bat said...

Urine Test - Cocaine can be detected up to 24 hours after a single dose. A breakdown product of cocaine can be detected for up to 22 days after repeated use
Blood Test - Cocaine is detectable up to 5-6 hours after a single dose

isn't huckabee religious ?? i am not going to church, and you can't make me.

Mannwich said...

I know, karen! It was more a rhetorical question than anything. Not aimed at you per se.

McFearless said...

I had a lot of lady clients that liked Mitt Romney, not his politics of course.

Mike Huckabee...when I see that guy all I can think about is Chuck Norris.

karen said...

congrats, I-Man!! fantastic.

Mannwich said...

I mean, how can the media or anyone know why the market does what it does and attribute it to ANY one thing.

"The market ended higher today after Mannwich ate a turkey sandwich for lunch today instead of a salad."

That's what this crap often amounts to.

McFearless said...

I,

way to go man....today would have been a tough day for any day trader.

McFearless said...

Mannwich, I asked myself that question many years ago, and it led me to e-wave....that's all I'll say.

karen said...

Chuck Norris isn't hung like a horse-

a horse is hung like Chuck Norris-

drum roll please-

yeah I think Huckabee was a preacher- and Governor of Arkansas- still a likable dude though

I-Man said...

Give us a heads up before you bust out the egg salad...

huckabee is the really smart one and has a solid ground organization in place. watch out!
karen - personally, i'm a militant agnostic "i don't know, and neither can you!"

Mannwich @ 4:06

I think you've got this market analysis thing down pat.

CV said...

Going higher tomorrow bitchez...

Any guesses how high?

Huckabee would get a lock on the South easily- and because he is likable- I don't think it would be too tough for him to bring in some other states-

Anonymous said...

guess I will head back to the office for a few hours-

will check in later

I-Man said...

One love all, gotta check out of the nuthouse for awhile.

McFearless said...

He (Huckabee) seemed to be doing really well last time and then he was just gone, he is a likeable guy, home-town sort of feel to him, but I'm not sure that's what social mood wants right now though, he might get the south, but how far does home-town fly with folks in LA and NYC?

McFearless said...

CV,

is that you in that pic?
