@Hof (from the other day ~ which I just read now)

what? really, are you looking for?

---

Good question...

Best answer is this...

When you endeavor to do something (& stick your neck out [reputation wise]), I think it's normal to think that if you're correct, you will receive some acknowledgement of that...

I've done that on many occasions (both in my life & on this blog)... I'd say that in my life, I've been fortunate enough to have received apt acknowledgements for insights & offerings...

In my experiences with this blog... Hardly anything at all (& frankly, often, the opposite)... I AGREE 100% that there ought to be a multitude of 'opinions' expressed... constantly... I AGREE 100% that my own contribution towards that is just another voice in the pile... But over time, things DO tend to become proven correct or incorrect...

In sports (which is my background)... There is (or ought to be) something called 'sportsmanship'... That is the moment, after the battle, that the two adversaries meet in the middle of the field & shake hands in acknowledgement of the battle just fought...

From my background, when you get 'stiffed' on that handshake, then there is something missing...

---

This isn't SPORTS... & this IS NOT a battlefield... I realize that...

But it's my best explanation as to why I sometimes appear to have a chip on my shoulder...

IOW ~ all... I... want... to... know... is:

I guess that's one way of putting it..

but, for me, personally, I tend to agree with your "Macro-"-'viewpoint'..

though, again, really?

if it is 'like that', I'll be supposin' that you may remain 'frustrated'..at best.. (:

Conclusion?

It's all a fucking circle jerk (because anyone with a motivation to cram ad hoc inputs, no matter how relevant they seem, into statistical models, can come up with any kind of chart they want)...

Weekly 3LB Update 2/3/12

cv said...

@QQQQ

BTW... That WAS NOT an attempt to discredit your work... I just wanted to point out that just about any ad hoc set of data points can be used as input to come up with any conclusions that someone might want to convey...

I'll give you an example...

This week, I was watching ESPN, & they were trying to convey this idea that the NY Giants (who accumulated 55 sacks during the regular season), only managed 4 sacks vs. teams that ran 2 TE sets...

55 vs. 4... WOW, that sounds like a huge dropoff in production! Right?

On first impression you go "Wow ~ the Patriots run a 2 TE set" (Gronkowski & Hernandez, who are both used prominently in the passing game)...

But then... Me (being the "johnny gut feel" that I am said to myself "Wait a minute, I watch a lot of NFL & I RARELY see 2 TE sets"... So I looked up the Giants schedule and lo & behold they only played 2 teams with 2 TE sets (Pats & 49ers)... The 49ers run with Vernon Davis & Delanie Walker... In any case, in those two games (reg season), the Giants got to Tom Brady twice & Alex Smith twice (then, got to Alex Smith 3x in the NFC Championship game)...

What's more are that there are hidden variables in data sets... The Giants played the 49ers TWICE on the road & the 49ers are a 'run first' team (less opportunities for sacks both because of time of possession & down & distance variables because the 49ers don't often find themselves in 3rd & long [when most sacks occur])...

In any case, even if you IGNORE the hidden variables (that show up on no statistical chart), the Giants had roughly 3.6 sacks per game vs. normal set offenses & 2.4 vs. Brady & Smith... An intelligent person (accounting for the 'style' of the SF offense) might rightfully round that out to 1 sack per game...

It's statistically INSIGNIFICANT... It amounts to, perhaps, one FAILED first down a game (assuming it happens on 3rd down & long, which is usually the case)... In some cases, depending on field position, it may thwart a TD drive and force a FG... But it is what it is...

Oddly, it was a FAILED sack that cost the Patriots the SuperBowl (vs. the Giants in 2008)... The Patriots only called ONE BLITZ PACKAGE the entire game, which happened to be the play, in the final minute, that Eli Manning threw to Plaxico Burress for the winning TD...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey4VdWauoYQ

The blitz forced 5'9" Ellis Hobbs to have to cover the 6'5" Burress man to man... Hobbs 'slipped' on the play...

Anyway... That's the STATISTICAL lesson for the evening...

It comes down to EXECUTION... Don't get me wrong... I'm as fond of stats as the next person (but MOSTLY to point out errors or BIASES in other peoples interpretations of them)...

Pretty good one.

Not surprised to see Eli win another one in the 4th quarter. That dude is clutch as shit....

I really loved taking the 3 pins and G-men on this game...

Made up for my earlier losses to CV...he he he....

Will update the SP500 tomorrow afternoon...

@AAIP

The reason I mentioned 1474 (or thereabouts ~ because I was really only eyeballing it)...

You'd have to look at a WEEKLY $SPX chart (going all the way back to 2009) & including the 200MA...

It sure looks like 2 things...

1. the 200MA was resistance, then it became support

2. on top of the 200MA (now), it looks like a H&S (a little tilted), may be forming...

More or less, the 'shoulder part' stretches from around 1150 to 1350 (left shoulder complete working on HEAD now)...

so... 1350-1150 * 1.618 + 1150 = 1474

kind of like that...

More idiotic things have happened... (like me sticking with the Pats in the Superbowl)...

Both teams had their chances to win the game...

I couldn't believe Wes Welker dropped that back shoulder pass on the 2nd to the last drive... That one play would have changed everything...

On Madonna...

All I know is that when you get Madonna, you know, at least, you're going to get something creative...

If you look at her 'performance', oddly enough, you're looking at the wrong thing... I'm going to point out all the fantastic elements that were stuffed into a 15 minute show...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyfdoZldrS4

- whether you like it or not, a LEGION of Roman slaves towing barges on ropes, as an into, visually, was epic...

- That 'graphical mat' (or whatever it was that was spread out over 60 yards of football field) projecting images was breathtaking at times on HDTV... (I especially liked the collage of moving VOGUE magazine covers at one point - then later of the football field roll-up, & when "Like A Prayer" started, the floating galaxy look)...

- Small little touches (like the harp) & that dude on the tightrope were clever...

- The 'drumline' band that came in at one point was VERY GOOD...

- She kept it up to date (audience demographics wise) by using hugely popular contemporary artists like LMFAO, Pitbull, M.I.A. & Nicki Minaj...

While most, probably rightfully so, like to criticize 'lip sync' jobs (as this mostly was)... I've said many times on this blog before that she has no lungs... I really didn't expect much different...

~~~~
People can criticize all they want, but that was a hell of a lot of thought, effort, & technology packed into 15 minutes...
But I'm sure all the CRITICS out there could come up with something better in their own massively creative minds over morning pancakes...
Anonymous said...
"..that back shoulder pass.."
that's putting it 'mildly', that Pass was (way) 'behind him'..
Collingsworth (He makes that Catch 100 times out of 100) to the contrary, if WW had made that catch, it would have been 'racked' as 'High-light'-Reel Special..
"But I'm sure all the CRITICS out there could come up with something better in their own massively creative minds over morning pancakes..."
no doubt..
as soon as I heard that 'Madonna' was the "Half-Time"-Show performer..
@AAIP
I heard that comment from Collinsworth...
I think BOTH of you are right... YES... It would have been highlight reel... But I still think Welker should have made that catch...
It wasn't any more difficult than the one David Tyree made 4 years ago (or the one that Manningham made later in the game)... Hell ~ it wasn't even harder than the interception that the LB made on the pass to Gronkowski earlier...
Welker needs to make that catch...
I came across this REMIX of 'Vogue'...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brJbsgiUINY
Which is none other to say that if you look at the anthology of clips (which pretty much are little 'clippettes' of all her work & span the career of Madonna ~ she's PAID HER DUES artistically over the long span of time)...
Whatever she does, she should never start a BLOG... Her career & contributions would be reduced to ashes in ZERO TIME FLAT by the first joker who came along that happened to have an opinion or was more of a "Lawrence Welk" or "Porter Wagoner" fan )...
