LEFTBACK'S BOND REPORT

The Bond Report 2.9.11

Maybe Ben does care about me, she mused, he was so doveish today... still I worry about those long nights working closely with Timmy. Cold Steel is still on her Rolodex... OK, on her I-Phone !!!

Corpies: LQD 0.65%; AGG 0.18%; JNK -0.62%; HYG -0.56%
Govies: TLT 0.87%; IEI 0.30%; TIP 0.29%
Munis: IQI -0.34%; MUB 0.28%
Mortgages: MBB 0.06%
Hedgies: TBT -1.63%

We did nothing today but did enjoy the respite provided by a risk-off day in credit after several days of getting much too familiar with Mr Steel.... too early to say if this was the peak in yields but the impulsive bounce off the sharp low yesterday had some elements of the bottom put in by TLT in April. Risks ahead include the PPI/CPI combo next week, and then the March jobs report. But we think a +250k is priced in, and it is clear that the QE2 is not going to be abbreviated.

The action in JNK and HYG today wasn't very bullish. Remember that credit usually leads equities.

Out of sorts all day with work on the real job, but Knife Catcher Capital LCC is quite pleased with the action today.

Ben certainly continues to make it clear that inflation does not and will never exist and we are betting that people will realize that these juicy 4.7% yields and some TLT appreciation will get the job done this year.

Initial claims should be BTE since many couldn't make it out to the offices to file (due to weather). Don't expect to see (from the MSM) weather used as a reason for the better numbers.

Pentagon’s New Ground Robot Can Hear You Breathing… Through a Wall
February 9th, 2011

Via: Wired:

America’s robots make deadly weapons. But there are countermeasures to even the most fearsome bot now in service. To avoid detection by aerial drones, Taliban fighters in Afghanistan have begun traveling in smaller groups. In his excellent book War, Sebastian Junger even describes Afghan fighters covering themselves with blankets on sun-warmed rocks to erase their infrared signatures, confounding the drones’ IR sensors.

But hiding from the Pentagon’s unmanned army could get a lot harder, thanks to new ground robot that can actually hear you breathing, even through a wall. The bot’s originator calls it “enhanced situational awareness.” We call it terrifying. Still, the robot does have potentially serious limitations.

Beginning late last year, California firm TiaLinx began rolling out a suite of hardware designed to detect the most minuscule signs of human presence. The Eagle5-N, which debuted late last year, is a low-power, wide-bandwidth radar mounted on a tripod. “In addition to breath detection, it can monitor a heartbeat and, by extension, the stress level of a person,” National Defense reported. “While the device was designed to detect humans behind walls, it also makes sense for rescue missions or monitoring human trafficking at the border — above and underground.”

Hillary Clinton: We Can’t Legalize Drugs Because ‘There Is Just Too Much Money in It’
February 8th, 2011

Mmm hmm.

Via: Reason:

Last week, while visiting Mexico, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was interviewed by Denise Maerker of Televisa, who asked her opinion of proposals to address black-market violence by repealing drug prohibition. Clinton’s response illustrates not only the intellectual bankruptcy of the prohibitionist position but the economic ignorance of a woman who would be president (emphasis added):

Maerker: In Mexico, there are those who propose not keeping going with this battle and legalize drug trafficking and consumption. What is your opinion?

Clinton: I don’t think that will work. I mean, I hear the same debate. I hear it in my country. It is not likely to work. There is just too much money in it, and I don’t think that—you can legalize small amounts for possession, but those who are making so much money selling, they have to be stopped......
