Bad news... I was turned down for chief of staff.

(AP:NEW YORK) Words like "unity" and "shared sacrifice" are in. Dire predictions are leavened with a sense of optimism. And residents are called on to live up to the legacy of their states' heroes _ like Connecticut's Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin; the astronauts who blasted into space from Florida; and the pioneers who settled California.

Confronting high unemployment and record deficits, governors are using their inaugural speeches to pledge fiscal austerity, job creation and a broad effort to rebuild public trust in state government.

Thirty-seven governors _ 23 Republicans, 13 Democrats and one independent _ were elected or re-elected in November. Most are being sworn in in January and are using the high-profile platform of the inaugural address to describe the perilous fiscal environment they face.

"To those who sincerely believe the state budget can be balanced with no tax increase, I say: If you can do so without destroying our schools, hospitals, and public safety, please send me your bill and I will sign it immediately," Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, a Democrat, said Monday.

Together, state budget shortfalls are expected to total nearly $140 billion in fiscal year 2012, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a Washington think tank. And while the national unemployment rate is 9.8 percent, many states are faring even worse _ Nevada's rate is 14.3 percent, Michigan and California are at 12.4 percent, and Rhode Island is stuck at 11.6 percent.

Such dire circumstances will force hard choices on governors, nearly all of whom are required to balance state budgets.

In his inaugural speech, Jerry Brown, a Democrat, referred to Californians' intrepid spirit as he outlined the monumental task ahead: closing a budget deficit estimated at $28 billion over 18 months.

"From the native peoples who survived the total transformation of their way of life, to the most recent arrival, stories of courage abound. And it's not over," Brown said.

In Florida, Republican Rick Scott struck a heroic note as well, saying: "We have always been the destination of dreamers, the place where someone with a big new idea could give it a try. Railroads in the wilderness, a magic kingdom, a trip to the moon, freedom from a foreign tyrant, better health, life without winter."

Don't take it personally...

You have to be a Chicago mobster to "make it" in this Administration...

If your last name was "Capone", you'd have been good as gold...

But you'd probably have had to Islamify Capone to something more appealing...

Maybe all you'd have needed was a "hyphen"...

"Al-Capone" sounds pretty Islamic when you look at it closely...

"Hussein Al-Capone" and you're probably as close to the 2nd coming of Mohammed as you can get...

"what type of Freezers do you go with?/ what's your take on 'Frost-Free' Freezers?"

If you're looking for a 'technical' answer on that, then consider me a dunce...

ALL... (and I mean ALL), of my experiences of various processes have been done by trial and error... I will be happy to share with you some of my 'findings', and what I consider to be relevant criteria...

---

- "FROST FREE", in my discovery, has less to do with the mechanical unit itself, and more to do with the packaging (and even the packaging 'process')... I don't even know the scientific reasoning behind why frost occurs, but my GUESS is... by pure observation... it is simply the humidity of the oxygen that is trapped in the packaging sequence (which is H2O, which becomes ice crystals)... So - the TIGHTER of an oxygen-free seal you get before storage - the LONGER the freezer life for products... It's immeasurably easier when actually FREEZING dry goods (like flour, beans, dry pasta, rice, powdered milk, etc.)... Meats are sometimes "hit or "miss", but the good thing there is that usually the FROST will show up quickly (giving you the opportunity to re-package)... Fruits and vegetables aren't really a problem because the frost doesn't do large scale damage, and/or these are the most frequently "replenished" things... I swear - More than half of my PRODUCE gets composted back into keeping the soil full of nutrients... I have WAY MORE than I could ever eat... I just grow it to produce heirloom seeds, and to keep composting... In a pinch, if I ever had to feed 12 more 'bodies' (to put up a barn), it wouldn't be a problem... Those 'roving bands of maurauders' that all the sissies worry about, I have little fear of... Why? Because I know how to DO THINGS from a fundamental level... That's KNOWLEDGE... If you're PIRATE, and you come across a fishing boat on the open sea (and you're starving and don't know how to fish, or where they are), are you going to KILL the skipper of the fishing boat? Or 'team up' with him?... Get my point? If they're THAT stupid and want to kill me... Then that's fine too... We all have to die eventually, right?

PART 3

But THAT's not what's important...

"SURVIVAL" means one thing and one thing only... That is... BUY SOME TIME...

I'll give you an easy and stupid example... I think "cheese" is essential... I love cheese, I know how to make it (a few different types even)... But that's something that can't be stored indefinitely... Parmesian is about the MOST DURABLE type (but that's not the point)...

My mind ALWAYS thinks of... "What if we ever ran out of this or that")...

CV said...

PART 4

The only REAL essential things you'd need to make a basic cheese would be:

- cheesecloth (which can be procured easily and is available in abundance, FOR NOW)...
- rennet tablets (unless you want to go cut the guts out of some bovine animals)
- a cheese press
- fresh milk

The first 3 can be obtained and stored for a hundred years if you want... The last - in the case of Armageddon will still be readily available as long as you're close to a farm... Jeez - in the case of mass paranoia, the cows would probably be wandering around not knowing what to do because they need to be milked on a daily basis...

Anyway - the point is... Know what to stockpile... Know "HOW" to stockpile it... & you're good as gold...

I gotta say that I was REALLY INSULTED by "MM's" comment (in the other thread)... It assumed that I didn't know anything, and placed calculations on that outcome...

Actually, the mathematics of the CALCULATIONS were fairly accurate... But the impressions in the practical knowledge of CV were wildly incorrect...

I guess that's what happens when 'half' your pen pals are nimwits whose idea of survival is whether or not the air conditioner is within a sliver of a 72 degree 40% humidity range in Cairo, and if there were protein enhanced "Twin-dogs" on the menu at a diner in Colorado Springs...

CV said...

Wait... this was PART 2... You all are just going to have to 'figure it out' (consider it LESSON 1 in Survival training)...

- So... FROST FREE depends more on packaging... Those FOOD SAVER devices are the best things I've come across... As stated in the previous thread... I'm eating thawed frozen meats & dry goods right now (from 2007-2008)... I SWEAR... I can't eat it fast enough... All my food is labeled (as to 'when' it went into storage)... I keep a fungible 3-5 year timeframe on LONG DURABLE goods... So, stored properly, the stuff I'm eating now was put into storage about 3 years ago and it tastes as fresh as if I'd bought it yesterday... GET THIS... I made a cup of hot chocolate the other day that I used COCOA powder that I KNOW has been in the pantry (just sitting there) since the 1970's (35 years)... The sugar was AT LEAST 5 years old... So was the dash of salt... The milk was fresh... That sucker was BETTER than if you'd gone to Starbucks and ordered something there... You just gotta know (what keeps, what doesn't, how to keep it)... Best variables there are PACKAGING, CONSTANT TEMPERATURE, DARK, LOW HUMIDITY... Food Saver isn't the "be all end all", but it's handy... I'm kind of a lover of 'glass' MASON JARS... The jars are perfect... The 'stores' you need are supplies of lids & sealers (which are cheap and can be obtained IN BULK at any Wal Mart)... Foodsaver has devices that you can suck the extra air out of mason jars... It's totally cool... I've been fooling around with various ways to FREEZE my tomato crops in jars (gotta remember that H20 expands when frozen - learned that the hard way)... My BEST method, thus far, has been to freeze my Roma Tomato crop, after blanching, on cookie sheets... then, place the frozen tomatoes into the glass jars, fill seal, then freeze again... That METHOD may be eventually supplanted... Anyway - that's only a FREEZER experiment... I've already perfected the normal method of canning (but that 'limits' the shelf life to about 9 months)... Freezing I've found almost ZERO limits to thus far...

- Next step is a matter or POWER... Electrical Power... So, of high value is, at minimum, and Energy Star version of a freezer... But in addition, WHERE the freezer is located... The cooler (as in UNDERGROUND) the better... It cracks me up all these 'Florida' residents who have WINE facilities... First of all, there are hardly 'basements' in Florida (for obvious reasons)... But also - if there's no basement, then there's no natural barrier to heat and humidity... So the 'cost' to operate a device to store wine isn't even worth it (unless you're some dumb rich schmuck like Barry Ritholtz)...

But it's not hard... If you know 6th grade math, you just calculate the energy pull of your device, and see whether it's worth it to you...

Next step? See of you can 'self sustain' that energy pull... I have individual solar panels to handle the calibrated outputs of independent devices... Plus the cost of redundant systems (failure of the system itself, component wipeout, UPS'es, generators, various fuel options for generators [propabe, gasoline, wood burning, all the way down to sterno])... You just fool around... Then calculate your REACTION to failure of any of those systems...

So there you have it... It really doesn't stop there either... And AGAIN... "NOTHING"... I mean N-O-T-H-I-N-G is completely fail safe...

But THAT's not what's important...

Oh... Here we go...

THE CLASSIC OF ALL TIME... (BR changes his "site look")...

Thread Post:

"Its been a while since our last site upgrade. In the intervening months, a number of good suggestions were made by readers, colleagues and random strangers stopping me on the streets of Manhattan.

Some of these ideas were great . . . some were impossible . . . but all revealed a degree of involvement that is, well, wonderful.

And so, in response you will notice a few tweaks:

• Masthead is narrower, with less wasted space — the single most requested design change.

• The Main Post page layout was “tightened up”

• Navigation was improved — Tabs are wider, submenus (about, contact, etc.) are cleaner and easier to read.

• The sarcastic suggestion I made last week generated lots of mail — so I moved that to the default message whenever anyone goes to comment. It doesn’t apply to most of you (but 2% of commenters should pay heed!).

• Twitter, RSS and Mail icons are coming top right

• I am cutting out most of the social network icons after each post, leaving just Digg, Twitter and Facebook.

• Bailout Nation is embedded into the sidebar;

You may have to refresh your cache to see the full changes; I see it in Safari but not in Firefox! If you see Book Shelf where Book Club was, you are seeing the new site.

Another thing: I have been adding more curated content to the Think Tank — not just the usual circle of authors, but additional people who you may not be familiar with. Bruce Bartlett, Bob Lefsetz, Macroman, and Washington’s Blog, amongst others. Marion Maneker will also be more active in helping to curate this, and contribute his own perspectives. Some folks have positions that I do not agree with — but I think they are very smart independent thinkers whose analyses provoke debate and a fresh perspective on current issues.

~~~
One last item: I am debating bringing on a researcher/intern. I am not sure about the position — it will probably be an unpaid gig more structured for a college student. Some colleagues swear by the process, others much less so. Anyone who can shed insight as to its merits, please let me know your thoughts!
For the record...
I 'definitely' don't think MM was trying to insult me...
I like MM a lot... Even through cyberspace, he comes off as a caring person who I'm 100% confident has a heart of 100% pure gold...
In order to do what I do (and have it BLEED)... I have to exaggerate, caricuature-ize, and dramatize certain things...
If it BLEEDS - it LEADS...
So many times I say things with an extra dollop of SALT and/or PUNGENT SPICE...
In order to get THE WORD across, one often has to cut down to the point where "nerves" are laid bare... I'm confident (because I KNOW WHO I AM), that I can 'reel back' the process, and that most will understand...
Some don't though...
Take DL...
I offered a 100% re-cantment (& apology) for a criticism I laid on him months back...
He NEVER came back, or was willing to accept that... At this point... It's NOT MY PROBLEM anymore... I'm at peace with my maker... :-)
maytag man said...
"frost free" freezers are not necessary, and use energy in a not very good way. All the "frost free" means is that the freezer itself won't turn into a block of ice. They manage this by heating, with electricity, the inside walls of the freezer to just above freezing. This would work against you if you were on a limited energy budget.
Chest freezers are the best, most efficient. It's also why grocery stores have those huge low bin style freezers, no top needed, cold air sinks.
In the newer stand up (door) style freezers every time someone opens the door all of the cold air runs out the bottom of the door, causing more energy usage to get the temp back down.
Freezing takes a lot of energy to do, but once something is frozen it is very easy (energy wise) to keep it frozen. I have heard that a full chest freezer uses less than a light bulb in electricity.
Thermal mass also works in your favor, the more mass that you have frozen, the easier it is to keep it frozen. Adding sealed containers full of water to a non-full freezer will up the energy cost to begin with, but will add more mass and make it easier on the compressor to keep it cool in the longer run.
Buy the energy when it's cheap.
also, "kill-a-watt" meters are fun for the whole family-
http://www.amazon.com/P3-International-P4400-Electricity-Monitor/dp/B00009MDBU
The design is not very good. Buy 2 short, highly rated "air conditioner" extension cords. The kill a watt unit blocks other outlets when plugged into the wall. Using the extension cords allows you to move it away from the wall, and makes it easier to read.
Got my mind settled on 1220, and 1190-ish, first... Gladly take more...
Kind of thinking we'd need to see a 4+ handle on 10yy before any serious move out of equities would take place...
I'd be happy to be proved wrong though...
Mass dumping of stocks to buy USTs? Better to get 4% than 0%.
