re: Libya

http://my.firedoglake.com/edwardteller/2011/03/03/israeli-company-hires-gadhafis-mercenaries-with-approval-of-the-israeli-government/
"An Israeli company is recruiting mercenaries to support Moammar Gadhafi’s efforts to suppress an uprising against his regime, an Israeli news site said Tuesday.
Citing Egyptian sources, the Hebrew-language news site Inyan Merkazi said the company was run by retired Israeli army commanders.
The report claims that many high-profile former Israeli officers have been illegally trading weapons in several African nations, and have faced interrogations over their activities in the past.
The news site said the head of the company recently met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Israeli intelligence chief Aviv Cokhavi. It added that the officials all approved the company’s recruitment of mercenaries to help Gadhafi."
So were I a betting person, I would not bet on any US, EU, or NATO intervention in Libya.

That .gov horn actually has a pretty fascinating story behind it.
At the time they were established, less than 100 of the old breed were around, J. Frank Dobie and some other gents roamed the southwest and northern Mexico to get the old, unadulterated bloodlines.
Started with a couple bulls and about 10 cows, if not for the refuge, they would be gone now.
Bred out for more profit margin, of course.

Milby Butler was another old pioneer who kept the breed pure.
He did a lot of line breeding and was really interested in the longhorn aspect of them, meaning huge horns. His cattle are distinguishable because of the solid white body coloring and red ears, and of course huge horns.
Two of his most famous bulls are Monarch 102 and Classic, my cattle mostly track back to his bloodlines.
I am trying to work on color right now, my little young bull is a black and white speckled lad and is really coming on.
Pull up Classic and Monarch, they are/were real nice.

.....ahab, that's funny
@Jennifer,
I could never find any correlation with currencies that lasted long enough to be meaningful, I bet some hedge funds are making a killing of this, others getting killed. With the Yen being where it hasn't been since the end of WWII perhaps it means we will have a 3,000% rally from here, ya know.....but I'm a little skeptical of that outcome at the moment.
Bruce,
despite all the talk of how great the economy is, and I'd certainly agree it is a lot better than 08-09, it seems to me that despite being down here on the zero bound, we are just sort of skating along on some pretty thin ice, with a cheap iPad2 in hand of course. I would guess then that a rate increase would be bad, it would really crush real estate. This seems to be the message of the market on the short end. Also, not to be johnny chart all the time, though last I checked this is still a traders site, higher rates doesn't always equate to lower oil, take the 03-07 time period as a recent example, higher rates had a positive correlation with oil during that period.

news, notes, and musings..
1. At pilates this evening, "Jan" read aloud two emails from Tokyo.. one from her good friend (and another from the daughter, age 29). She also relayed many of the first hand accounts from the day of the earthquake onward as she receives word everyday. I have shivers and tears. They were/are well prepared with food and have electricity at least half of the day. But the situation in the north is dire.
2. Bruce, LB has flown the coop! London and then Sri Lanka, then London, before "home" to NY.. no burgers for 3 weeks !! For him, the bigger withdrawal will be no pizza, I suspect.
3. Chet, Carolyn is going to cross country in Mammoth with Kathy Adams this weekend.. btw, she said Lynn was a psycho.. her present husband dated her as well.. Lynn was viciously jealous apparently.

Now, I'll regal you all with some Shakespeare... "Let me count the ways"...
- First of all, since friggin May of 2009, the Maiden Lane portfolio ISN'T EVEN HEDGED... To save a few pennies on paying a premium to hedge that against interest rate hikes, they dropped it altogether... All you need to do is watch how Blackrock manages that, and you have everything you need to know about the derivative risk there... Assuming anyone actually tells the truth...
- Since late 2009, there has been a huge move of the longer term debt rollover moving from 10yN & 30yB towards... mostly a 2 year rollover (or otherwise in the 'belly' area)...
No effing way in hell that the Fed could EVER raise rates at this point... Jesus Herman Christ, they're the largest holders & buyers of Treasury Debt on the planet... Until MARTIANS arrive to purchase out debt, there exists NOBODY to sell it to... And now, possibly, you have the 3rd largest holders, the Japanese, ostensibly needing to SELL their holdings into the market...
I friggin need "Sri Lanka Lefty" here to back me up on this because I'm sure all you readers think of me as only some buffoon who collects nickles and knows how to count to 8 in rhythm...
Fuck me (and the horse I rode in on)...

One has to appreciate that NOWHERE does it say "Federal Reserve Note" on it... What's THAT payable to the bearer on demand?
Possibly a "look see" into empty vaults???

CV-
I wouldn't part w/ any of it-
but I am particularly fond of the Kennedy halves-
childhood memories- nice half dollar in your pocket-

I have few a silver certificates
a few...not "few a"
Of course...
Fives and tens of this time were mainly Federal Reserve Notes, which were backed by and redeemable in gold. All this would change, however, with the beginning of the Great Depression in October 1929. The United States was plunged into an economic disaster of profound proportions.
Many citizens blamed the fluctuating price of gold (no doubt the "bankers" told them so), which directly affected the U.S. dollar because it was pegged to the value of gold....
President-"elect" Franklin Roosevelt felt the same way... (of course he damn well did - after all - he was President "ELECT" - the SAME way WILSON was President ELECT when he authorized the Fed charter, or Obama was President ELECT during the crisis of 2008-2009 before the famous "PROFIT to EARNINGS teleprompter speech just before FASB rules were changed)... Roosevelt persuaded Congress to recall all gold coins, gold bullion, and gold certificates, which circulated alongside Silver Certificates. This prompted Congress to quietly place the U.S. on the silver standard (and of course, as Ron Paul says "Nowadays we can't even hold a copper or zinc standard")... On May 12, 1933, the Agricultural Adjustment Act was passed, which included a clause allowing for the pumping of silver into the market to replace the gold. A new Series 1933 $10 Silver Certificate was printed and released, but not many were released into circulation.
In 1934, a law was passed in Congress that changed the obligation on Silver Certificates so as to denote the current location of the silver. This law also allowed the government to exchange silver bullion for the certificates, not just silver dollars. The 1933, along with its sister, the 1933A, $10 silvers, as well as the 1928 $1 silvers were phased out and replaced with certificates of Series 1934. The small-size $5 Silver Certificate was introduced with this series, as well...
Then...
In 1963 President John F. Kennedy issued Executive Order 11110authorizing the Department of Treasury to issue additional Silver Certificates for any silver held by the U.S. Government in excess of that not already backing issued certificates... Basically - usurping the FED's monopoly on money printing...
He was tragically assassinated a few months later...

JPY going that low was a major bank gone bust, IMO.
Kennedy released those silver certs, and I have heard a lot of speculation that it was the final nail in his coffin.

I heard that about Kennedy some years ago. That messing with the "money" did him in.
I don't have time to fill out a bracket. I am trading nights this week and have not had much sleep.
Something about filling out one of those takes the fun out of the tourney for me.
I appreciate the offer though.
Hope all is well with everyone.
Why is it that every year, for the past couple, the NCAA's lead to market "fluctuations"? Bear sterns happened during it, if I am remembering correctly.

Well - I'm sure he wasn't the FIRST, & I presume he won't be the LAST...
But I don't have my charts handy, so there's NO WAY I can verify that notion...
@bob
That's OK... But I only ask for refresher...
Who "IS" your "squadra del cuore" (team of your heart) in the Big East...
Frankly - I'll offer this...
I think Pitt (with a #1 seed), will get bounced earlier than either Syracuse, Notre Dame, or Connecticut...
I have Gerogetown getting bounced early... St. Johns advancing a round or so, then out... WVU getting bounced early... Can't think off the top of my head who I'm missing (me being the IDIOT who goes on "gut feel" and all)...
Anyway... If my head is screwed on straight... I think I have Notre Dame going deepest...
Nic, if she happens to be reading this, ought to be pleased to hear that...
But again, my 'rememberance' on that is not based on charts or statistics... It's OFF THE TOP OF MY DOME... Simple 'recollection'... I'm not in the habit of writing this stuff down, or charting it on an "x" "y" axis (same way with Lynn G. karen - no "diary" there from 25 years ago - simple anecdotal reference)...
So be VERY WARY of my input...
Sincerely,
CV

Piss off the banks and the mob, and you'll get that.
Wait, maybe they are the same thing? The amount of money in the Caribbean seems to say yes....
Pretty classy "gun and dump" there in the equities, huh?
Karen, I believe you said it nicely the other day, "banks trying to unload their positions," I believe it was.

Hope folks are trading this well, volatility is a double edged sword.
I've been covering my shorts pretty conservatively in this tape. Getting back in can be tough for sure, but nothing wrong with booking 20 ticks at a time in the YM. Havent caught the 100 ticker yet, but its coming.

I can almost "verify" there will be a financial institution in trouble if the USDJPY doesn't get back to 79.75 by the open.
Lets call it another 500 dow points for this swing, and its done.
That'd be about 11K, and would wipe out the move off the Nov lows, sounds about symmetrical to I and I...
CV
Cuse, big east kind of got screwed as far as placement in the brackets. I have only done a once over and don't really know how it will shake out.
Pitt is good. St.J is the same old bronx playground team, they will get killed by real refs. Cuse can do some damage, but I hate the point, he is stupid, and you can't fix that. Jackson is really under rated.
I can't believe that ND got anywhere. The white kid on the team will pull ratings. Giving Brey coach of the year is like putting jimmy cayne on CNBC.
The rest are all dangerous, but no real "standouts". I think the tourney should show if they are all that much better, or over rated.
CV.. I did READ Smilla's Sense of Snow !! probably saw the movie because I loved the book.. but the book is all I remember. Before the internet, I read non-stop : )
@karen
Another ANECDOTAL story... Kinda "Lynn" related...
She (they)... Came in to my West Hollywood studio classes around late summer 1987...
You have to place yourself in the timeframe (or else you'll laugh), but Lynn drove a white Mercedes 190 sedan (with tan leather interior), which I thought was "the bomb" at the time... I said to myself (me - being a Suzuki Samurai cheep jeep owner at the time - altho THAT was kinda cool in those dayz)... "I want one of these MF's [the Mercedes]"...
Within a year, I saved my nickles and bought, CASH, an upgraded version of Lynn's ride (I bought a "300" sedan - but I went midnight blue with a tan leather interior)...
I almost TOTALLED the thing on the Las Vegas strip about 2 years later... (Did some serious "frame" damage to it... Hookers, booze, & gambling, CV found, didn't mix)...
Learned a lesson... And many years later, became a "a "blogger" that nobody cares to pay attention to because my CHART ANALYSIS can't POSSIBLY be up to par with a LIFELONG of experience of various things in 45 countries...

More on what I know best.
Cuse, they were really hurt by Rautins leaving. Snoop was great off the bench to mix things up, but he has zero sense, and is not getting better. I'd put him one on one against most. His "management" has to be telephoned in.
Melo was supposed to be great. He had an early season injury that did now allow him to get into shape, he has been dragging ass ever since. Too bad, having a real center and using jackson as a PF is deadly. His showing at the BET was the best yet, can he come back this late?
Jackson is awesome this year. Complete change from last year, dropped 20 pounds and looks like a marathon runner compared to him last season. He's more of a threat at PF, but can play center better than most. Very aware of where "he is".
Keita is good, better than most. He "gets" the game boeheim plays, big guys on offense stand at the top of the key, and sprint back to the other end. Points? Rebounds? If you can, but you are most of all a big fence.
Trische is building on a great start. He is finally getting some confidence. He's a great athlete.
Joseph is also not the brightest bulb, but he has some great days.
The bench may be suffering from too much talent and ego.

(She turned me on to the 'Parker Meridian' [which I STILL think is one of the best VALUE/LUXURY choices on the island - especially LATER when one understands the savoir faire of the brand and how they deal with the European elite in their locations - I won't get into it, but I'm referring more to the European 'business elite')]...
@bob
Totally agree on Jackson & Keita... Good analysis there...
@karen
WAIT... I "misstated" above...
By late summer 1987, CV was gone from that studio... I'm not thinking my rememberances thru... (perhaps it's BETTER, after all, to rely on charts - ror)...
In any case, it would have been the late 1986 to early 1987 timeframe...
Too many margarita pitchers at MARIX Tex Mex must have clouded my memory :-)...
No WONDER I suck at trading... I guess I'm more the "buy and hold" type... These days that means BULLION... :-)
One more thought, I gave St. J short shrift. Lavin has done great work there, but he needs another year or two to get the team he wants.
Brey is not a good coach. He makes stupid decisions. The recruits he gets cover a lot of his mistakes. He is very prone to being out-coached.
EUR defining gravity for the time being...
(Reuters) - Bank of America, Citigroup and Barclays have received subpoenas from U.S. regulators probing the setting of the London interbank offered rate, or Libor, for U.S. dollars between 2006 and 2008, the Financial Times said, citing people familiar with the investigation.
Gee, ya think?
@bob
"It's ON" (says CV, now)... Big East style...
Virginia Commonwealth beat USC (and will now face Georgetown in Rd. 1)...
I'm taking VCU... (Georgetown, Pitt, & WVU are overrated, badly coached, chokers, IMO)...
I 'hear ya' on St. John's... REALLY - to me, they were one of the more entertaining teams to watch in the later season (& Big E tourney)...
But they're NOT closers...
Assuming BYU can get by WOFFORD (and I 'underline' ASSUMING ('could' be a 13-4 'shocker' there)... I think BYU gets by St. John's...
Again - what DEFENSE does St. John's have (or offense that can CLOSE a critical game that's gonna stop the "Jimmer" man)?...
St John's... one & done...
In re: Silver.
I sold about $2500 worth of Silver "junk" at an average 33-34 via Ebay. [I don't mind sending the Ebay results to anyone that really cares].
Didn't get rid of all the Kennedys. I liked the Lady Liberty and Franklins A LOT more than the Kennedy...I suppose it is a preference thing.
I was hoping to sell another $2500 worth of the Junk on a "new high" in Silver in the 37-38 range. Unfortunately, that may not happen.
Silver has a better shot of seeing low 20's than a 50 handle. I don't mind standing by whatever that bet was....
Was at the Houston Rodeo tonight to see Miranda Lambert. The wife and daughters are big, big fans. I think she's pretty "ok" as well.
This was my very first Houston Rodeo. It's a big thing in these parts, but I'm just not a "Rodeo" guy and I loathe big crowds.
Some notes:
If you take children to a Rodeo, who have never been to a rodeo or seen anything like it on television, prepare them for the "Calf Roping" competition.
It was the very first event of the evening and my two daughters both looked at us in sheer horror at what they were witnessing. My oldest (13) started to tear up a bit. The rest of it was OK and a lot of fun, but calf roping can be a tough one for the animal lovers out there.
Across the aisle, I noticed a "cowboy" type with a buck knife on his belt. At that point it occurred to me there was no "pat down" or metal detectors to get into the place. Crazy. I don't remember the last time I was at 70K+ venue like that without a metal detector, etc. It's a much different experience than the football games in the same arena. What does that say about the two different crowds???
Miranda Lambert is terrific. If you have any affinity toward the "country/rock" fusion stuff and she's in the area, check out the show. She's got a great band backing her and she's pretty good.
@Andy
Actually - I think I'd buy at the $37-$38 range...
Not to make yet another enemy on this site that thinks I'm FOS... (Hell - I'm pretty sure, by now, I'll have my IP address 'banned' [as with other blogs] when it hits triple digits...
Past $36, It's ought to be a straight run to Hunt Bros territory...
Tsunamis/Quisps & Quakes/ have put a pause on the momentum... for now...

It says that if & when Obama repeals the 2nd amendment, based on his SUPERIOR intellect in interpreting the Constitution... only OUTLAWS (vis a vis - Chicago union workers) will own guns)...
