As long as anyone is interested, I'll continue to post a weekend thread on featured NCAA & NFL games... For the full slate of 'picks' & game write-ups, I'm going to insert a link to the blogspace where it's easier to navigate thru (for you sports nuts)... You'll find that the COMMENT section on that blog is disactivated at the moment (as I prefer it to be used more as a static resource webpage, rather than an interactive journal)...

WEEK 1 - FEATURE GAME

#3 Oregon Ducks (-2.5) vs. #4 LSU Tigers (8:00 PM)
(@Cowboys Stadium - Dallas)
This is the first time since 1999 that 'single digit ranked ranked' opponents have squared off in WEEK 1 - NCAA...

I'm still pissed off that I took Oregon in the BCS title game last year (for 5 units) & lost... I'm NOT holding that strike against Oregon... It's just that... The game was WEIRD (& I'm still trying to figure out how Oregon lost)...

More than anything, I'm pissed that it gane the SEC another whole offseason to act as 'elitists'...

Speaking of 'weird'... Les Miles (LSU) has said that this training camp has been the 'weirdest' he's ever experienced as a head coach... Les Miles is not a guy to play silly mind games, so if he said it, who am I to disagree?... I guess having half your team arrested in a silly bar fight counts as weird...

In any case... How can Oregon hope to do anything this year if it can't manage itself in this game? In the SEC, you always have a fallback... You can LOSE to a top ranked opponent, then wiggle through the SEC & climb back up the rankings (because, well, of that MURDER of a gauntlet in the SEC you have to go thru by beating Kentucky, Vanderbilt, & Ole Miss)...

cv likes OREGON for (2 units)...

to be Clear, I like the 'Football "Wraps"/"Picks"/"Sqwalks"', just, not, a huge FF'er, and, really, am, still, a BB 'Fan', at heart--while it's still 'in Season'..

My fantasy BB team has been a major run the last few weeks

helps that Albert is really hot right now, for having a "slow" season his stats are pretty sick. That guy is bionic, if it ever came out that he was juicing I think it would, literally, destroy baseball.

That being said, I'd just like to state

WE ARE!

(not that stupid commercial either)

I also enjoy the football write-ups, don't mind them during the week either but I do get it's a trading/market site first.

Exactly... I think things ought to work out well this way...

Trade during the day... football at night & on weekends...

@Hoff

Same with me (baseball)... I'm going to add fantasy baseball to the site coming next year...

CV has a fantasy team right now in the playoffs...

I tried a new strategy this year (& so far it's working - it's a new 'theory' on drafting a team [similar to the one I use in fantasy football - but I can't convey here or else the 'cat will be out of the bag on the EVE of me having to draft against Ben & Andy tomorrtow night in FF])...

Since most fantasy baseball leagues are in their final 2 weeks to win championships... I'm going to put up a few FB thoughts on the blog next week...

My new motto...(In my loudest, most bellowing bass voice - Think VIKING)...

"THE SIMPLICITY OF THIS GAME AMUSES ME... BRING ME ALL THE FINEST MEATS & CHEESES IN THE LAND!

Love the football picks and logic that you use in picking the games.

Just want to give a little shout out to whomever created the TiVo/DVR experience.

I'm out tonight celebrating a buddies' B-DAy....

Two awesome college games going down tonight....I have lots of College Football to watch TOMORROW morning.

Good luck in (OUR) draft tomorrow night...

You know that CV is going to give neither YOU or BEN... NO QUARTER...

Not that either of you need it...

For the 'uninitiated' football freaks out there... CV considers ANDY & BEN ('Teir 1') fantasy footballers...

@CV

From an artist/designer pov...One tiny quibble with FSN...font choices.

imo...anything related to comic book sans or some such...should remain within a couple of sentences within a cartoon ballon.

Serious intelligent, educated, and perceptive analysis requires more paragraph breaks and a more "readible" and "legible fonts"...in keeping with the content.

I know most of the stuff that comes loaded on any 'pute tends toward crap, boring or overused...which is why I use the following for personal work:

www.emigre.com

www.psyops.com

www.linotype.com

The "Aaux" and "Abadi" families (Rotis Sans and Din 1451) from Linotype.

"Mrs. Eaves" for a serif face from Emigre.

"Blackbox Mono" (sans and serif) from Psyops.

These are just examples...of course...there are thousands of choices.

Historically...I've fluffed out the invoice on font purchases... if you're reluctant...there's always torrent and an anonymizer;-)

From an old advertising adage: People don't read advertising...they read what interests them.

If you're interested...let me know...I'll put a bit of time and thought into it.

I actually didn't plan to keep it (LONGTERM)...

It's kind of an 'inside' joke (the type I used) Has personal meaning... Gonna keep it that way just for a bit until the wagon starts rolling, then go to something more normal...

I've got one more after tonight on Tuesday and then let the party start

was a decent opening weekend for college football imo

ben22 said...

there was some discussion here a few months back about wall street getting smaller

just some general numbers

US Pop is about 312 million, 27% of which are under the age of 20, wealthy children aside, I sort of figure most people under 20 don't have enough money to need advice so:

There are about 665k people registered with FINRA as an advisor or RIA

Generally then it would seem there is one advisor for every 350 people or so in the US.

Thats fairly extreme imo, but doesn't really rival the type of thing seen in most huge bubbles, examples:

Florida Land Boom of the 1920's

This was one serious RE bubble, David Dreman says in Psychology and the Stock Market that in one example, a lot in Miami Beach purchased for $800 was resold several years later (1924) for $150,000. Another lot located near Miami was purchased for $25 in 1896 and sold in 1925 for $125,000. He reports that one man quadrupled his money on a beachfront lot within a week. Any of that sound familiar? And people still tell me you can't learn anything about the future by studying history....it would seem to me what took place in Florida in the 2000's was nothing new.

In 1925 Miami provided employment for 25,000 brokers and more than 2,000 offices (RE brokers, that is) At the time the entire population of Miami was estimated to be 75,000, or one broker for every 3 residents!

South Seas Bubble

At the height of the mania the value of the company's stock was the equivalent of five times the available cash not just in England but in the whole of Europe.

This sounds nearly similar to the idea that there are some 1 quadrillion in outstanding derivatives that supposedly exist.

Japan:

In the late 1980's the value of the land encompassing the Emperor's Palace in Tokyo was equivalent to the total value of all New York.

And so this observation has been repeated for a long long time:

Brooks Adams, in The Law of Civilization and Decay (1897)

"Another conviction forced on my mind, by the examination of long periods of history, was the exceedingly small part played by conscious thought in molding the fate of men. At the moment of action the human being almost invariably obeys an instinct, like an animal; only after action has ceased does he reflect."

**I would note that one Jesse Livermore got swept up in that Florida real estate bubble, as was Roger Babson, J.C. Penney and William Jennings Bryan.

I got boned in yesterdays draft... Yahoo wouldn't launch the live draft application on my computer...

I tried re-booting... but nothing...

I'm looking thru what it 'autopicked' for me... Not HATEFUL, but definitely NOT a team I would have drafted...

Since I was in the #3 slot... I'd have taken RAY RICE there, (meaning either Brady, Brees, or Rivers would have still been available at #18)...

I'd have taken one of those QB's with #18... & @23, since I already had a solid back, would have taken the best available WR at that slot (which would probably have meant Vincent Jackson, Mike Wallace, or maybe Greg Jennings)...

After that it's not HATEFUL... But it autopicked defenses & 'WTF'??? Randy Moss???

It means that I'm going to have to go in & blow WAIVER $$ to make all the adjustments...

Needless to say... CV has his work cut out for him this year... If I can guide THIS 'autopicked' team in to the post season, I deserve a medal!

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-09-04/merkel-s-euro-gambit-ends-in-home-defeat.html

"German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party suffered its fifth election loss this year after she failed to sway voters in her home state with a campaign based on her handling of the euro-area debt crisis.

The Social Democrats, the main opposition party nationally, took 35.7 percent to win yesterday’s election in Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania, preliminary results show. Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union had 23.1 percent, its worst tally since voting began in the state in 1990 after reunification that year between West Germany and the former communist East Germany."

....The train has lost the engine. and the Finns are still holding on to collateral for the worthless Greek loans. Should be an interesting week ahead.

CV,

I'm thinking you would have never taken Michael Turner in the first round.

I hadn't realized you were on Auto pick and then that selection came up....I'm sitting here thinking "huh?"

only after Andy said something I realized you were on auto pick.

It's true your team doesn't look too bad but there were picks in the late rounds as well I'm sure you'd have never made.

On the other side, there were some interesting picks from some people, one person picked Plaxico and then a round or two later ryan Grant, which was interesting .

I might have picked an injury squad, but we'll see, kickers could hurt you in this league.
