I mean really... WTF cares? You'd have made a lot more money if you took my advice last night and laid 10 points with the "Dog Killers" against the Texans, or "taken the 4 points" with the Arizona State Sundevils playing Arizona (the Pac-10 conference - fixing college football games since 1959)...
Alright... I'll just dip my big soup ladel in the pot here and slop you up enough mush to hopefully keep you busy over the weekend while you're NOT reading my NCAA & NFL handicaps or look at the winning totals...
Who are the "Black Swans" playing this weekend, I wonder?...
I know it's hard to get through MCC (and why is she looking like Dolph Lundgren these days)?... But if you manage to do that, your reward is getting to see Taleb basically call the Bernank an @sshat... Little rewards are all you get these days Romans... (Wasn't it Nero who started clipping coins)?...
On that note:
Hong Kong Experiences Fake Gold Scam
EXCERPT:
"A high-tech scam unfolded in Hong Kong, after at least 200 ounces of fake gold was discovered by a group of jewelers."
Looks like a job for:
"The counterfeit gold was reported to have a street value of about $280,000, according to the Financial Times. While the discovered amount is small, some analysts believe it may be just the tip of the iceberg of a much larger counterfeit metals operation..."
"The fake gold used a pure gold coating to mask an alloy with similar properties to real gold. The metal included 51 percent of the bullion, mixed with seven other metals."
A "high tech scam"? I don't see anything wrong with that... These guys do it all the time:
Fed Officials Say Easing Policy Can Be Calibrated
EXCERPT:"The U.S. Federal Reserve's controversial $600 billion bond buying program is subject to regular review and can be adjusted if needed, top Fed officials said on Thursday."
"We should not be the Politburo and we should not be indecipherable," he told reporters after speaking to economists in Washington."
Did someone just use "NOT" and "POLITBURO" in the same sentence? Let's ask these guys (who, like Hong Kong Jewelers, Pac-10 refs, FRB presidents, and Chicago politicians, also know how to "fix" things)...
China Announces Shift to 'Prudent' Monetary Policy
EXCERPT:
"China will switch to a prudent monetary policy from a moderately loose stance, the Communist Party's top leaders decided on Friday, a change that could pave the way for more interest rate increases and lending controls, the state Xinhua news agency reported on Friday..."
"At the same time, the Politburo elected to maintain China's proactive fiscal policy, an indication that the government wants to continue to ramp up investment spending at the same time as taking tightening steps to control inflation."
Read that last sentence over, and over, and over, until your eyes turn into pinwheels (and there's that word "politburo" again)...
Oh... and by the way... If you were looking for something honest... Today's version has it that you have to go to Switzerland...
WikiLeaks Moves Its Website to Switzerland After Domain Service Is Cut Off
(Gratuitous Buxom Swiss Miss foto - the thing that makes this blog readable)
Joe Lieberman's Campaign To Trample The First Amendment Is Proceeding Right On Schedule
EXCERPT:"As if it wasn't enough that America's ruling oligarchs were sufficiently happy with abdicating their governing duties to the Federal Reserve, they have now decided to imitate China in every possible way..."
"After Joe Lieberman made a mockery of Internet freedom of speech (and of Amazon's independence) he has now decided to step up his campaign against un-coopted journalists everywhere, precisely as we suspected would happen next in the USSA. Per MSNBC, the Independent Connecticut senator has told Tableau, a Seattle company that allows Web users to post charts, to remove several charts describing the release of WikiLeaks material"
If, by now you're so confused that you DON'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK... Then actually, there's help! There are blogs on the internet who specifically cater to people who don't know how to think... I'd start at TWSWB's crib, and then hustle yourself over to all the TWSWB "parrots" who will serve you milk and cookies while you agree...
Oh... and if you're wondering why Assange hasn't been nabbed yet... Well, last I heard he was in southern England... And they were hot on his tail...

nice post CV.
I'm still on the game last night, LeBron should just be a "bad guy" now, imo
he had such bounce in his step early in that game yesterday he thrived off that crowd
Michael Jordon didn't need that kind of motivation to want to win so badly, he just wanted to, doesn't seem like LeBron has that same fire.

long and complicated article:
Fed Created Conflicts in Improvising Financial System Rescue
“It seems clear that the biggest beneficiaries were the insiders,” said Dean Baker, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington. “We have a huge pinata here. The question is whether we had insiders deciding who would get the candy or was everyone in the same boat? Think of the people who get upset about the government giving a homeowner some help. Now multiply the sums by about 100 million. We should care.”

hahaha,
good thing you guys used those VCR's
this could be worth a rewind over the weekend
lol, seriously, lets hope for some swift revisions, or better yet, just change the methodology already
"The question is whether we had insiders deciding who would get the candy or was everyone in the same boat?"
---
and that's a QUESTION?
I thought a "question" went something like...
"Hmmm... I wonder what I'll use as a blog name or a blog slogan"...
See?
I've changed my mind on that about 100 times since last January (but still continue to QUESTION my choices - as to whether they continue to reflect the atmosphere and/or the mission)...
I've seen other examples that are just basically ripoffs of other peoples ideas...
I guess they fall into the "DON'T QUESTION AUTHORITY" genre...
hey, i liked that music vid.. : )
as for the question, i am completely aghast..
In honor of the big (18*2)+4, I awoke this morning to a giant sign in the front yard heralding the "prehistoric" news, surrounded by a field of 40 large purple long-necked dinosaurs. I'm getting an eggnog latte to celebrate.

Thank you! -- We live at the end of a cul-de-sac street. My desk is in front of a window that has a view down the street. It is funny to see how many people have turned to come down our little street to check out my giant field of dinosaurs. My husband is a funny guy.

Friday? The BEARs can run but they can’t hide. What makes this so incredible is the speed of the move. It’s been one hell of a party on the upside the last few days. In Asia of 6 of 11 markets closed lower. In Europe 6 of 10 markets are trading modestly lower. We also have factory orders, ISM non-mfg index out this morning. One of the trades we follow is called "Counter Trend Friday." How this works is some traders look to fade a big gap up open or the first rally above if there are 400+ ESZs traded before the 8:30 open. The idea is that with so many minis traded and the markets up so much, most people probably bought at high prices and because they can not hold over the weekend they put in sell stops. If they start out down hard it works in reverse but ideally we lean to selling rallies. USE STOPS.
what are the dinosaurs made of and where did he find them?
are there forty?? LOL
FYI

all these new precious metals ETFs.. where is the $$$ coming from to buy them all??
From The Ben Bernank.
I can't believe futures are actually trying to come back. After all of the NFP hype we should be under 1200 by now. I guess they're ignoring this also.
@karen
"all these new precious metals ETFs.. where is the $$$ coming from to buy them all??"
a better question would be... Where is all the PRECIOUS METAL going to come from if people keep buying them? (see gold above in thread)...
@AmenRA (9:29)
JBTFD... lol
The 30y is hardly moving, perhaps b/c of the supply ahead, and that is really a bearish sign for TLT. The belly of the curve has reversed the monster move almost completely. Hilarious stuff....
Where is all the PRECIOUS METAL going to come from if people keep buying them? (see gold above in thread)...
There isn't any....
Karen -- yes, there are 40 of them! They look like cardboard, or foam board -- they came from some local company that provides those big stork signs for when people have babies (very popular in my neighborhood until the recent demographic changes...) and in the middle is a big sign that says "Announcing the "pre" historic news: Jennifer turns 40 today! Welcome to the middle ages. From your adoring, youthful husband." (he's 10 months older than me.) Okay, off to preschool. Good luck today everyone!
i'm still interested in the gld:uup H&S formation.. today just about proportions the right shoulder evenly..
Happy birthday Jennifer!
From where I am sitting the proportions look perfect....
my other fixation, GovMo..
Now I'm hearing the ISM Non-Man is more important than NFP. JTFOOH
There really isn't much important data left in 2010. You all know what is going to happen. Even if the market sells off a bit today...
JBTFD.
Selling of equities today would not surprise me...
...but it will be bought
The long bond is very weak and that will continue.
any of you guys talked to Nic lately? She hasn't updated her site in a long time.
I bought some of the effing dip this morning in a few individual names
we'll keep em quiet for now in case they don't work out
if they do I'll be sure to let you all know about it
:-)
I also brought broccoli to work
best of both worlds-
weak economic numbers- QE2 confirmed- stocks go up
strong economic numbers- recovery confirmed- stocks go up-
it's a win/win people
Nic tweets.. she's on line today.. you could send her an email.. i checked her blog today too.. i have that harmonic trader report too.. was the number 1270?
An unemployment report like that means QE3. :D Yeah, that means you should sell your underwear to buy stocks because you need every penny you can get in the risk trade (and nothing is more risky than going commando).
Stock Pare Losses As Investors Brush Off Jobs Report
jobs? who cares?
Jennifer-
I actually preferred 40 to 30 (because when you're in your 20's you can be a total "blow off"- people let it slide- but when you turn 30 things are expected of you)
happy birthday- get some nice rye whiskey and make yourself a Sazerac to celebrate
LB,
We dumped all the rest of our TLT at 103 and slighly above.
I'm feeling really good about that right now, I'm not quite as confident as you are about the larger direction of the long bond, but in the near term I wouldn't want to be long of it.
Jenniffer - Happy Born Day to you. When I read it was your 18th (Plus a quadratic equation) born day, I rushed right over to the VHS shelf and found "Barny's BirthDay" I now have Barny the exceedingly annoying purple dinosaur on.
I hope it is loud enuff to wake up the neighbors.
Mangy Mutt
LOL.. no, 1470!!
karen,
no, I think it was way higher than that on the harmonic chart, 1300+
I have the printed copy but it's at home so I can't remember for sure.
so here's something, how do I get to read her twitter posts, I really don't know, you can't just type in nic on twitter.com right? there's probably more than one Nic tweeting.
I never really got into the whole tweety thing
i am definitely intrigued: businessinsider

mostly she is just conversing with some people.. telling them to read Macro Man, instance.. a bit of banter.. i'll have and will repost any relevant comments.
this wikileaks drama interests me-
check this out from Mish- assassination of Assange being openly discussed on a TV interview-

yeah, I was writing mine when you did it
I thought I remembered it being way up there
I'm looking forward to the GN man's update today, at this point I have laser focus on that count and not really too concerned about other charts
though, I did save the GLD:UUP because that H&S is very clean
"Julian Assange's Ominous Warning: If Something Happens To Us, All The Key Data Will Be Released Automatically"
Great! Then do something to them...
It would be 10x worse if they struck a deal and then nothing was released...
What kind of s*** would that be?

I'm interested in the Wiki leaks thing but it wouldn't seem that anything they have put out there yet was some sort of revelation

Thanks, everyone! MM -- yes, the dinos look very much like Barney! I had to google Sazarac. While I'd be up for a trip to New Orleans, I'm not much for anything flavored with absinthe. I'll stick to the eggnog latte -- in my perfect world they would be available all year long and I would be able to drink one every day without 1) heart palpitations from all the caffeine and 2) weighing 200 lbs from all those calories.
@Bruce,
I'm not going to give up on you and sunspots.
So, here's a question, I know you do not think it's fruity to recognize that cycles do in fact exist, right?
a calendar
the seasons
are some pretty basic cycles I think most people agree on
do you deny that these things have any impact at all on human behaivor, the seasons alone would seem like a very easy example.
sunspots are really just an extension of other cycles, and we observe that during periods of high or low sunspot activity certain behaivors occur, so why just dismiss it?
not really any more crazy than observing certain behaivors when it's cold outside which are different than what you see when its warm.
Politicians talk some smack on other world leaders
I found the revelation that a few Arab countries were petitioning the US to attack Iran quite intriguing (to have "out in the open" and all)
but- Iran are Persians after all- hatred appears to linger around for centuries
jennifer,
i've still never tried absinthe
didn't really like that movie Moulin rouge either
blech....that song from the movie that played over and over and over and over again
Never watched Moulin rouge...so I can't say. The new EWFF is out though...fun b-day reading.
ahab,
the persians have been at war or fighting since the days of ishmael
but I suppose that's important as you say, of course, then there are big oil producers over there that finance the Taliban....so who knows
yeah, just got the e-mail, but the new Socionomist came out yesterday
trying to determine which is more valuable at this point
in a Sazerac- you don't use absinthe per se- can be Herbsaint-
but it's only used to coat the inside of the glass-
main ingredients are Peychaud's bitters and Rye whiskey- and a sugar cube
. . .topped off with a lemon twist
There was other stuff in the leaks. For example, there was confirmation that the CIA, in a case of mistaken identity, kidnapped a German citizen, transported him to Afghanistan, and then tortured him, then threatened Germany to keep it a secret.
"If Something Happens To Us, All The Key Data Will Be Released Automatically"
This is not a threat at all. If they assassinate him, the documents will be released (according to him). If they DON'T assassinate him, he will release them anyway.
I'm probably more frou-frou than that...maybe a whiskey sour? And the little geeks have a chess tournament at 9 tomorrow morning so I'm not allowed to have a hangover.
"There was other stuff in the leaks. For example, there was confirmation that the CIA, in a case of mistaken identity, kidnapped a German citizen, transported him to Afghanistan, and then tortured him, then threatened Germany to keep it a secret."
They are enabled to do that through the Patriot Act....it's right in there.
b22-
exactly- and Persians are muslim- but not Arabs-
a few years ago, on the GMI (government monitoring information) of a loan application-
I checked off Asian- Persian dude got hostile-
said he was white-
and I guess technically- he's correct
I heard that there is a provision in the patriot act to genetically alter bears so that they become...
ZOMBIE BEARS!!!!
OMG!!!!!
I've been trying to tell you guys
it would do everyone well to try and get familiar with the effing Patriot Act like yesterday
it's insane, Bush did a lot of damage to the economy no doubt, the Patriot Act is on a whole different level.
ahab,
that society has long associated with weapons
do you remember when yassar arafat signed the peace treaty during the clinton years, do you recall that he wore a pistol to the signing.....
This is what I hate about the MSM. They hype up a number and when it comes out against their views they rush to minimize its importance. F them.
it's insane, Bush did a lot of damage to the economy no doubt, the Patriot Act is on a whole different level.
no doubt- but all president's like the power it gives them-
I wonder what Jimmy Carter would do?
Happy Birthday Jenn Super Mom!
Now did we all buy the dip?
Its done the I right so far...
ahab,
obama clearly does, as I observed the other day, it would appear to me that he thinks all public debate could stop once he was elected, especially with things like this.
Jennifer-
the only reason I brought up the Sazerac- was I was thinking of the "Festive" New Orleans spirit as a great way to celebrate a birthday-
but frou frou drinks will work:-)!
(and eggnog)
@ LB
We should be kicking it over a few pints tonight bro! Festivus is tonight...
I promise I will make that shit next year. Just dont have the flow I need to be coast hopping for Holiday parties.
i suppose you heard that trimtabs is refuting today's BLS number.. so zerohedge points out..
Last time TrimTabs turned optimistic was at the year's highs in April http://youtu.be/DbmyAhtILgQ
there was a +40k in temp services in that jobs report today
and Jennifer, look out, average hourly wages up a fat penny.
clearly there remains some big disconnect between this and ADP, as was mentioned yesterday
b22-
where are all the war protesters now?
it's all politics-
Wage inflation in the face of increasing supply... that makes sense (just like animals wanting to learn how to talk so they can hang out with Ray Lewis because he uses Old Spice).
did people buy the dip first thing:
http://www.cboe.com/data/IntraDayVol.aspx
it might appear so
guess that broccoli video got around
ahab,
yeah, no doubt, millions are out busy restoring sanity instead
@ McF
I wanted to first thing, but I opted for the second one.
Looked alot cleaner...
We might "hovertrade" for awhile tho, now its just a patience thing.
I'm actually hoping to catch a runner before lunch so I can bounce.
http://www.zerohedge.com/article/68-billion-pomo-closes-fed-buys-43-billion-3-year-bond-auctioned-october
there was a column I was reading from Eugene Robinson (WaPo) titled:
"Why Granny Got Searched"
"An unacceptable, un-American invasion of privacy? That’s not what critics were saying at the time. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano’s assessment of the underwear bombing attempt—that “the system worked” because a fellow passenger jumped Abdulmutallab—was ridiculed. If there was technology that could have detected the underpants device, critics asked, why hadn’t it been in place?"
so . . .one terrorist with explosives in his skivvies and it comes to this?
wasn't this the same dude alerted to the authorities as a possible threat and then was allowed to board without a passport?
but yet- we need to make flying even more of a pain in the ass because someone could be storing dynamite in his BVD's
"I'm actually hoping to catch a runner before lunch so I can bounce."
nice, good luck.
I have a mtg. at 2 and I'm not feeling so hot, might call it a day after.
"I also sold Ultra Silver (AGQ) which I restarted in the fund Monday. It is up 15.5% in 4 days as silver is on fire. Apparently silver now wins in all economies - it is the David Tepper metal; if economic figures are bad it means more central bank debasement of fiat currency, and if the figures are good it becomes more industrial usage - "you can't lose!""

We're going to close higher.
I-Man
It seems to be struggling to stay up. It's like Atlas has fallen down on one knee and is about to scream "No mas!"

"where are all the war protesters now?"
Well - This past summer, Rachel Maddow went to Afghanistan to do this big special on herself...
Conclusion?
Now, suddenly, she "gets it"...
See... It wasn't WAR... It was just that it was being managed improperly...
And that Gitmo... Is it closed yet? I forgot to check...
Yeah, it certainly isnt as trendy as I'd hoped to be able to book out of the office at NY lunch...
I hate hovertrading between inner fibs.
$spx has a rounded top on the 10 or 30 minute charts.. usually means going down..
Sometimes I get the feeling that the euro close is what we wait for alot of the time. There is certainly some kind of truth to that, just havent quanted it out.
Those buying the dips are just in time to catch the final push higher. I hope they know when to sell.
I-Man
I've noticed that also. The market will stay close to flat until the European close and then pull the plug.
Alright, I-Man's calling it a day... just not seeing what I want, and not going to force it anymore than I have already.

and all because DGDF
silver's up on the economy, like it was in the 80's and 90's
errrr....
DGDF is sort of funny mainly because dollar has just bounced off the lower trendline for years making higher lows
but yeah, DGDF I guess.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Whats-Going-On-With-usnews-4224756103.html?x=0&sec=topStories&pos=8&asset=&ccode=
says Stacey Schreft, former vice president and economist at the Fed. "It's definitely not a failure, and it's way too soon to conclude that it would be even if one could conclude that,"
how about QE1, too early to tell if that worked or not?
More GGUF and EGDF than DGDF lately. This is just a bounce and provided an exit rally for China and EM fans. That story has been capped by China's tightening noises. Probably room for a little bit more exuberance in US and Japan.
Let's say EURUSD retraces a 50% or a 61.8% of the last decline from above 1,40 to just below 1.30, then all of a sudden it is "Au Revoir, Jean-Claude" and "Bonjour Bucky" once more, as Euro debt problems return to the front burner and hedge funds get back to the serious business of shorting Spain in an attempt to induce full QEasing by the ECB, while Mangler protests the falling EUR even as German exports boom...
But that may be a New Year story. Can't interrupt the regularly scheduled bonus stuffing Santa Claus rally, eh?
MackieFear,
easy, on the '80s, '90s references, re: Ind. uses of Ag..
there are 'more' uses of it now..
though, Photographic Film production has tanked...
one would have to wonder if Net Industrial Demand is as high.
"Investment" Demand is Higher, though..
but, EOD, the 'crowd vibe', for Silver, is getting pretty 'loud'/shrill..

"It's true that Bernanke once supported Fed policies that contributed to the 2008 financial meltdown, and failed to foresee the worst parts of the downturn. But there is virtually nobody in the financial or economic firmament who accurately predicted the course of the boom, bust, recession, and recovery."
Mark,
fair enough
I'm simply pointing out that Silver, like stocks, DOES NOT move on "the economy"
this isn't really up for debate, and fairly easy to prove

“On November 19, 2010, Comcast informed Level 3 that, for the first time, it will demand a recurring fee from Level 3 to transmit Internet online movies and other content to Comcast’s customers who request such content. By taking this action, Comcast is effectively putting up a toll booth at the borders of its broadband Internet access network, enabling it to unilaterally decide how much to charge for content which competes with its own cable TV and Xfinity delivered content. This action by Comcast threatens the open Internet and is a clear abuse of the dominant control that Comcast exerts in broadband access markets as the nation’s largest cable provider....

CV,
you're, actually, a good ex.--for the point I was drawing out..
peep think 'Money will buy Food' ...
they should think again..
they'd be better off understanding "Food buys 'Money'"
"Money", itself, is a Derivative.

you know, i am in shock about a lot of things.. but $wlsh and $tran making new highs on the year and back to 2008 levels truly has me upside down.
i'm sorry, actually only $tran has made a new high since the QE2 rally..
CV,
speaking of pre-64...
did you ever see the "PSA" (Public Service Announcement) done by that quiff, and her hand-puppet, "Lamb Chop", talking about a 'Chage'-shortage 'at the Bank' ??
~"Run to your 'Piggy Banks', take your unneeded 'Change' to The 'Bank', there's a 'Change'-shortage.."

well team, I've gotten hugely bearish twice this year and both times ended up being wrong but at least catching some of the downside and not giving it all back on the way up.
well, I'm getting there again, and this time it would seem I'm much more in contrast to the rest of the board which makes me feel a little better.
Perhaps the third time is a charm, perhaps I'm a complete moron and I'll get smoked and stopped out. I'm willing to take that risk.
it's time to start getting serious about January and what is likely to occur
I'm trading long with you all now, but I'm looking to be DL Hugely short in 2011.
good luck squad, may the force be with you.

Mark,
you still using the same e-mail as before? I have an interesting article about supply and demand with financial prices vs. the economy that I'd like to scan and send to you, think you might enjoy it.
McB,
yes, more than likely..(e|mail)
alright, I still have it, I'll get on that when I have a few minutes
"but $wlsh and $tran making new highs on the year and back to 2008 levels truly has me upside down."
Karen, LB would be happy to help you reach new highs, would love to have you upside down....
@AAIP
I haven seen that announcement, but I don't doubt it...
I came across a 1964 dime the other day (in a pile of about $80 worth of dimes)...
Not much of a sampling size... But if you figure it out... Your chances are probably around 1 in 800 of finding silver in dem dar hills at the moment... WAY less, I'm sure, with quarters... I don't think I've seen a pre 64 Washington Quarter (in change), in over 20 years...
Now... I you want to talk COPPER, that's a different story...
I'd still say I pull out about 10% of pennies as pre-1982...
NICKLES... 100% (because they haven't changed since 1946)... tho I'm sure that'll be rectified very soon)...
Good thing with nickles is too... 1942-1945 has some silver in there... And since nobody seems to care about nickles... You find some of those (at a higher weight than dimes)...
Remember too... a nickel is 5 grams... 5 of them together weigh more than the same face value quarter...
So everyone can continue to use their Chase Sapphire rewards cards (and get their 1% back)... I'mm take my 20% with the metal...
Massive steepener on today. Works for LB, still short the long end.
Watching TIP and HYG - stubbornly refusing to move.
Mark - I know Cvienne has been big on nickles lately and even though I agree with his thought process, unless he melts it down and trades in the nickle for scrap value all he has right now is a nickle... OR LOTS of them.
Can you imagine being the person in line behind someone paying for groceries in nickles? 5...10...15...20...25 "Hey buddy hurry up!!!" Oh damn, I just lost count. 5...10....15....20....
Like him, I have been hoarding, not only nickles, but pennies and it is getting exceedingly difficult to find pre-83 pennies. When I first started (Mass) collecting pennies about 5 years ago, they were every where. Today it is hardly worth the effort to try and sort them out.
So that kind of brings up a question in my mind.
Are there that many others out there hoarding pennies?
Is the government taking the pre-83 out of circulation?
Or are others (China, India) buying them for the copper value.

tbt at hod.. so interesting
@McF
Who said anybody was trading "long" here?
I actually wasn't doing anything ('cept silver) recently...
I'm out of that "trade" as of yesterday (so missed a little movement today), and maybe even some more in the short term... we'll see...
Cashola... & I'm tiptoeing into shorts all in this 1220 area...
um, CV,
in case you missed the video dude
buy the effing dip
ha, nah, just got the impression there were quite a few long trades today, I-man, lefty, maybe karen has some longs, and me....probably others too.
i have only one long position now and it is a cr*ppy one except for the dividend..
Karen -- thoughts on this 5 min SPX candle? Is it the last retest of the 50 before the eod ramp (Plus, 4 POMO days next week, sorry Ben) or maybe, just maybe, something else?
Cvienne - Although in the last, about year, I have tappered off my coin collecting, I would agree with you finding a silver dime or pre-68 half dollar is WAAAYYYY easier then finding a pre-65 quarter.
Although a couple months ago, I stopped by a 7-11 payed with a $5 bill and the clerk handed me a silver quarter.
But the funny part is, before it actually hit my hand, he noticed it, bounced it off the counter, looks quizingly at it and says "Looks like this one is made from aluminum" Bahahahahaha
Yea just put that aluminum quarter in my hand buddy...
Anyway I then had him go through the rest of his till for more "Aluminum" quarters... Sadly it was the only one.

LB has longs but no short term trades today.
25% long equities of which 10% is SPY, and 25% long HYG.
LB also holds a permanent long position for KAREN...
Birthday Girl, I am at a loss : )
i looked at 5, 10, and 15.. let's look at dollar or euro instead.. dollar still kicking.. or twitching as the case may be..
Ben,
The largest, fastest decline since 2008 is some crazy-ness.
@Mutt
You're missing the ENTIRE point (on nickles)...
OK... Think of yourself as, say, back in 1970... (only 40 years ago)...
Back then, you probably still found a lot of pre 1964 silver coinage floating around in change...
The pre 1964 dimes (which nobody cared about)... They're worth $2.10 today (and a dealer will buy them from you and take his cut)...
So it's not an issue of "melting them down"...
There have always been markets for coins (because they are KNOWN QUANTITIES - in terms of weights & metal content)...
So in the future... If we inflate copper TRIPLES in its dollar based price (assuming there is a dollar)... Then you're protected against inflation...
Let's say everything DEFLATES (and there's a glut in metals prices), yet the dollar remains the reserve currency...
You still hold face value dollars (and they may have some numismatic value)...
But go ahead, I'll let everyone else trade their paper silver contracts (as if they just "discovered" it yesterday)...
Someone must expect a lot of tv based shopping this weekend -- HSNI up almost 5% today
There is a long bond POMO on MONDAY. LB is not holding his TBT over the weekend. Stops tightened here.
When you see something you like (profits) you have to squeeze it gently and take it home with you..... right, Karen?
MM,
re: "Are there that many others out there hoarding pennies?

'Coin Collecting' is a Huge hobby, in the States, alone..
and, while CV seems 'unique', here, He's far from alone in 'separating the 'Wheat' from the 'Chaff'--in the circulating media..
also, I wouldn't be, the least bit, surprised if the PROC exported a couple hundred 'Nationals' to sort 'pennies'. here, for Export..
Is the 'gov't' "doing it"? don't be surprised if they are...
as well, coin separation/counting/authentication 'Technology' has come a long way from simple 'scales'..
it, easily, can be automated to handle volumes that could 'do the job'..
AAIP
@McF (2:06)
Maybe you're right... I really haven't been paying much attention to who might be long, and who isn't lately...
I've been hinting on this since the summer...
This last QE2 jamboree (since August), really pissed me off...
Not $$ wise (because I didn't play much on ups or downs), but TIME wise... I'm just sick of all the bullshit...
- I'm sick of "the elections" (all that crap in Sept & Oct)
- I'm sick of POMO
- I'm sick of the Bernank
- I'm sick of JCT
- I'm sick of bonus baby season
- Christmas rallies
- Wave counts
- Ending diagonals
So I was lucky enough to catch a little of the last move on silver (since about $25), ON PAPER (I admit it... Even though I'm more interested in the PHYSICAL, but I think there will still be an opportunity to buy PHYSICAL near $20 again)...
But now that we've finally scaled back to the top of the mountain (1220)... I'm interested in being short again...
But I still think there may be some more TIME here... (or, there may not be)...
I just skeptical of much more upside risk (in equities), before the EOY... Maybe a percent or two if somebody happens to fat finger something...
It's easier guessing what "Louisiana Tech" is going to do than guessing what a bunch of bots which are programmed to key on words from THE BEARD are going to do...
@AAIP
"'Wheat' from the 'Chaff'"
LOL - or, the wheat from the Lincoln Memorial
CV,
how you doing for 'Refractory' Brick?
that'd be something to get, now, you know, when you 'don't need it' ..
AAIP
anyway, gotta bolt, I'll try to catch up later..
At least if Louisiana Tech doesn't cover the spread, there aren't a bunch of pussy bankers and politicians running around screaming about TEOTWAWKI...
Maybe only a few Rajun' Cajuns'
mark -
coin separation/counting/authentication 'Technology' has come a long way from simple 'scales'..
it, easily, can be automated to handle volumes that could 'do the job'..
so that's what's behind cstr's valuation!?!
Some weeks you make money, other weeks you avoid losses.
This was one of the latter.
@AAIP (2:31)
Lol... You know... I've "thought" about it... Never CONSIDERED it (mind you)... Just, you know, played 'scenarios' out (and of course that's the end game to some scenarios)...
Let's put it this way... Everyone thinks CV is some 'tin foil hat'... But really, I'm just prudent and cautious...
If & when I start building kilns & smelters, you'll know I've either gone off the deep end & tossed the final lug nut, (or worse - gotten REALLY serious)...
Meanwhile... (on the subject of TIN FOIL HATS)...
Answer me this... Is CV buying food & things in preparation for exogenous events (which some interpret CV to be contemplating TEOTWAWKI)...Well...
Is that MORE CRAZY than a bunch of bankers and politicians literally suggesting TEOTWAWKI, unless they receive massive bailouts from the system?
Who is crazier?
- If the bankers are correct (and the system WILL collapse and be TEOTWAWKI), then it makes CV's preparations rather 'smart' I'd say...
- If the bankers are WRONG (and there is actually NO RISK to the system ever collapsing - nor ever was), then why do we need all these bailouts & fixes in the first place?
I'll be waiting for all your answers...
"Subprime is contained"!
@72
Ha! Coinstar!
Are you seeing a pattern? (hint: mass confiscation of metals)...
I'll bet COINSTAR hopes that you bring by a bunch of nickles, dump them in their machines...
And they'll hand you back fresh notes with "Timmeh's" autograph on them...
@Mutt
It's not a waste (at least to me) to do a hand sort...
It's something I do when I'm sitting around doing nothing (like watching a football game on TV)... No different - practically - than cracking nuts or eating popcorn...
Anyway... all the more recent stuff beyong 1982 with the pennies, or 1965 with dimes & quarters...
I just roll them up, thake them to the bank, and exchange them for nickles...
the xrt candle is something to behold..

ZH has a transcript of the Assange interview on the Guardian that crashed the site...
Cvienne - Oh I am on the same page as you are with hording coins and agree that holding copper or nickle coins is a good long term stragy - Cuz that is what I have been doing.
I guess my thinking comes more making a grab from easy money.
Back when I started hording pennies (5ish years ago) the cost of each penny was about 1cent of copper. Roughly about 3ish years ago copper pennies reached about 2cent copper weight. So I thought "Heck, if I bought $100 worth of copper pennies melted them down I would have $200 worth of copper, trade that $200 in for more pennies and so on and so forth."
I haven't done the math, but I would not be surprised if there is more melt value in zinc pennies too.
I am all for hording and holding, but I think quick money could be made in melting.

Don't worry, there will be another one along sooner or later...
tradefast
everyone knows by now - bernanke on 60 minutes sunday - his appearance in march 2009 ignited a huge rally
@Mutt
Technically... It's illegal to MELT the coins...
So anyone doing this have to have a VERY LONG time perspective of what they're doing...
I still couldn't MELT the silver quarters... But they are of KNOWN value (and there are dealers [even governments] willing to take them off your hands) when that value becomes knows...
Hell... For all we know, the world will run out of ZINC, and the post 1983 pennies will be a valuable commodity in years to come...
My bet is that ANYTHING will be more valuable than FRN's...
Cvienne - I hadn't thought of exchanging the zinc pennies for nickles.
The zinc pennies do not store well, but if they are in an air tight container they should last quite a few years, so that is what I have been doing. And keeping them as a mini-emergency fund.
But now I will have to put some thought into trading them in for nickles.
Mangy Mutt

If CV had a million dollars to blow right now?
I'd buy 3 minutes worth of ad space on that 60 minutes program with the BERNANK on it...
and air that video I put up yesterday telling people to JBTFD...
lol
@MM
It's the easiest way to get the nickle collection going fast...
They don't come too fast in change back from your dollar (on any purchase), if you don't ask for them specifically...
Cvienne (3:16)- Thank Goodness we have the Fedral Reserve to hold us accountable for technically illegal currency issues :)

Court Ruling: Monsanto’s Genetically Engineered Sugar Beets Pose Risk of Irreparable Environmental Harm

Has Obama Ever Met an Industrial Food Shill He Didn’t Appoint?
Obama Gives Key Agriculture Post to Agribusiness Goon Who Lobbied for Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont and Dow
Via: AP:
A federal judge in California has ordered the removal from the ground of plants grown to produce seeds for genetically modified sugar beets, citing the potential for environmental harm.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White has again raised questions about the use of genetically modified crops and what will happen if growers aren’t allowed to plant GMO seeds.
About 95 percent of the sugar beet crop has been genetically modified to resist the weed killer Roundup. The crop provides roughly half of the nation’s sugar supply.
In his decision, White cited, “a significant risk of environmental harm.”
White ruled in a lawsuit filed by environmental groups challenging a decision in September by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services to issue permits to seed companies to plant sugar beet stecklings. The young plants produce seeds that then are planted to grow sugar beets.
The agency decided to issue the permits despite an August ruling by White that put a hold on future planting of genetically modified sugar beets. The ruling allowed this year’s crop to be harvested and processed, but the current seed crop was not to be planted until the USDA reviewed the effects the crops could have on other food..."
