http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/retail/story/2011-10-29/walmart-hours/50998054/1

"It's really trying to re-establish itself as a low-price leader, and the only way to be a low-price leader is to be a low-overhead leader," said Beemer. "I think Wal-Mart is looking at all of their costs. They are trying to figure it out."

Wal-Mart, being the mammoth retailer it is, likely won't have to worry about losing money to competitors. The money it will save in overhead from closing stores during the night will far outweigh the losses in overnight sales.

And you better believe Wal-Mart researched all of that before making the decision to roll back some hours, Beemer said.

"Wal-Mart probably figured out the sales from midnight to 6 a.m. just weren't worth the effort," he said.

...More jobs in the bucket....

Why the latest eurozone bail-out is destined to fail within weeks

"The eurozone must be consolidated. World leaders should similarly force European banks to disclose their losses, we all take the hit and then we move on. Instead, we are served-up, in ever more complex variants, the same "extend and pretend" non-solutions. It gives me no pleasure to write this, but I give this deal two weeks."

6.5 inches of snow out at the farm...

Plus, to add to that, the whole area got blacked out by some kind of electric transformer which went kablooey...

Not me tho (as I'm basically 'off grid' & have several redundancies)... The snow put a hex on the solar & the wind turbines aren't spinning... So I'm down to the propane generators...

Just enough power to hook up the internet & watch NFL Red Zone & watch Ottoman's Empire beat the Grandmas with two hands tied behind my back...

Anyone else see the Stanford/USC game last night?

I did...as I'm a USC Alumnus....

The officiating crew was either "on the take" or incompetent....

CV...file that crew away for future reference.

They didn't call a few blantant Pass intereference calls in the first quarter. At the end of the game, they outright blew the call. USC should have a shot at a 49 yard field goal to win it.

Crazy.

There's about six good weekends per year in Houston...where the weather is perfect. this has been one of those weekends....funny how the weather changes the "mood"....

I will get some technical work up "some time" today....I've got a "cheer competition" to attend right in the middle of the afternoon....so not sure when the work will go up tonight.

@Andy, Woods was definitely in bounds on that last play, and if you believe that a coach can call timeout and get it acknowledged in less than 0.5 seconds, then good luck with that ;-)

I agree with you on the lack of calls on the PI in the first quarter -- one of those was particularly bad. But, did you notice the blatant hold that they didn't call on USC on that last drive in regulation? That was ridiculous -- it was out in the open and you could see that from the ISS. So that tends to make the whole last-second thing moot.

I would go with incompetent, it would be hard to argue they were good refs. I think USC got jobbed on some stuff, and Stanford got jobbed on some stuff.

Full disclosure -- I'm a Stanford alum ;-)

(AP:MONTPELIER, Vt.) A Vermont couple thought they were getting a sweet deal on real Vermont maple syrup when they found a good price for it on the Internet.

The man who was selling it told them he was a trucker from Rhode Island who passed through Vermont and that he would meet them in Brattleboro to give them their syrup, said Henry Marckres, a maple specialist with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture.

Turns out the syrup they bought in 2009 wasn't real at all, officials say. Tests show it was pure cane sugar.

It didn't take long for the couple from Vermont _ the largest producer of maple syrup in the country_ to discern a phony.

The taste wasn't quite right, Marckres said. It looked like syrup, but was too light in color to be labeled as Grade B syrup, which is dark, said Marckres.

"It was sweet, but it had no maple flavor at all," he said.

To protect the purity of Vermont's signature crop and to dissuade others from passing off fake maple syrup for the real thing _ which sells for about $50 a gallon _ Vermont's two U.S. senators have co-sponsored a bill that would make it a felony to sell fake maple syrup as the real thing. It would also increase the penalties in existing law from one year to five years in prison.

"Vermonters take pride in the natural products our state produces," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. He says the growing number of individuals and businesses selling fake maple syrup alarms him.

"This is fraud, plain and simple, and it undermines a key part of Vermont's economy," he added.

Co-sponsoring the bill _ the Maple Agriculture Protection and Law Enforcement (MAPLE) Act with Leahy are Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Maine Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, and New York Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

Bernard Coleman of West Warwick, R.I., was indicted last month on charges that he brought adulterated maple syrup into interstate commerce, which carries a one-year penalty. A federal public defender did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Other foods like coffee, catfish and certain onions have their own special protections. At least six states have labeling requirements for the sale of catfish, according to a report from National Agricultural Law Center.

The name Vidalia Onions is trademarked and reserved for onions grown in a certain region of southeast Georgia. Washington State is very protective of Walla Walla Sweet Onions and prohibits use of the name unless onions are grown in that area. Hawaii also requires labels to specify the percentage of Hawaii-grown coffee in coffee blends...."
