Morning Corner 8.17.11

GOLD (weekly info)
new high 1742.60
trend=up
high= 1742.60
rev= 1603.70; mid= 1673.15

As hard as they tried to deal a knock out blow to gold last week it couldn't be done. Gold still made a new weekly 3LB high. It's still above all SMA's. It didn't violate the 0.0% retrace. This week it's already moving higher and looking to test the recent intraday highs.

WMT (weekly info)
new low 49.75
trend=down
low= 49.75
rev= 51.75; mid= 50.75

WMT is again running away from its 61.8% retrace (which has been in place since 2008). It's earnings helped further the move (overseas earnings). It's back above the SMA(233) and the 50.0% retrace. But WMT's outlook is not too good when "Dollar" stores are taking their customers. This move higher appears to be on weak volume but it's now trading above the weekly 3LB reversal price.

WMT has the "food stamps" program going for it (at minimum - to keep traffic coming to the store at least one day a month)...

cv said...

That is... Until our Lord & Savior TOTUS spends the 'next' $200 billion on ways to deliver the food right to your door &/or FLOTUS teaches you how to grow okra in a garbage can on your back porchstep even while you're personally on a trip to Spain & Martha's Vineyard during growing season...

It's a miraculous accomplishment in agricultural engineering technology...

there's a, serious, why the 'Private Equity' Boys are in Dollar General/Dollar Tree/99c Stores/et al., and, Not in WMT...

that 'bloated pig' is more an Economic 'Terra-forming'-Op, than a Financial Investment..prob., a good reason why it's found in, most, every MutFund..

Hmmm... I wonder what you'll be able to buy at one of those in about 10 years (if you can afford the gas to drive there)...

Confederate plates could be touchy issue for Perry

http://news.yahoo.com/confederate-plates-could-touchy-issue-perry-230723612.html

---

What is it about people who just automatically see a confederate flag & think it means you're a card carrying KKK member?

OK... So let's say to even that score, I think everyone should just automatically assume that if you live in West Hollywood, you're some kind of "Turkish Prison" hangin', sexually deviant liker of movies about Gladiators, who spends all their time wanting to see grown men naked...

Yeah... That about wraps up that profiling...

---

The Civil War wasn't fought, (in the first case), over the "moral" issue of slavery... Though it seems that history wants to remember it that way...

When Lincoln signed the 'Emancapation Proclamation', it was done so more as to deal a crippling blow to the 'economy' of the South...

Without slave labor, it was difficult for the South to fund its war machine, & there were 'sidelong' hopes that some of the freed slaves would also go north & fight for the Union Army...

Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union... STOP... He is often 'erroneously' portrayed as some kind of moral emancapator...

---

Note: None of these comments have anything to do with slavery as a talking point... I'm just referring to 'revisionism' & otherwise 'Monday morning quarterbacking'...

Lincoln would be one of those people

PS... At least the foto is appropriate... CV has always accused the Community Organizer in Chief of NEVER so much as having run a dairy Queen...

But it looks (in the foto), as if dairy queen is where the new jobs will start...

You see... Obama doesn't just blow bubbles up your ass... He blows bubbles with 'kittens' inside of them up your ass...

speaking of DQ

I had to go to the Dr. for quick visit about two weeks ago

was flipping through Newsweek while in the lobby, they had a US map with "top employers in each state"

was it supposed to be positive that several states had top employers like

Taco Bell
McDonalds

and, I believe in Texas: Pizza Hut

"His ideas will be outlined in a major speech immediately after the September 5 Labor Day holiday, White House officials said.

As in... Immediately AFTER he gets back from vacationing in Martha's Vineyard...

cv said...

Taco Bell & Pizza Hut are the same company... Yum... (who also owns KFC)...

I'm sure u already knew that

cv said...

Anyway...

If Obama REALLY is serious about cutting the deficit... About the only 'realistic' option I see for him would be to announce that he was going to set himself ablaze on national television (and make it a "pay per view" event - proceeds going to pay off the debt)...

Anybody got any better ideas?

ben22 said...

it was state by state which specific business employed the most, I should have ripped that page out of the magazine

but yeah

showing that Yum is a top employer in several states

don't get me wrong, a job is a job in an environment like this, but you can't really support yourself working at a Taco Bell

it didn't exactly make me think great things about where we are at right now, to say the least

also, how many plans is this now that obama has made to create jobs? 5, maybe 6, maybe more?

when are people going to wake the eff up and realize that the government doesn't really have the power to push the economy around like so many people want them to be able to do....

Crude oil inventories higher than expected even though gas prices were down. So low gas prices still isn't enough to convince people to drive and shop. Explains the waterfall on the 5-min SPX chart.

AmenRa said...

Then again if people are switching from Walmart to Dollar Store/General, Family Dollar, etc. low gas prices are not a panacea.

""don't get me wrong, a job is a job in an environment like this, but you can't really support yourself working at a Taco Bell""

AND WHY?

max CA UI is $490/wk ($12.25/hr)

why work for $8.00/hr in CA? or SanFran $9.92/hr

what's funny is they ask "did you look for work?"

say yes and you looked for work at (google for which companys laid-off alot of employees that week) OR you looked for jobs @ NASA, CIA, Federal Reserve, Soros Fund, White House for Czar openings, ...you get the picture, check arrives in 2 weeks.

oops, my bad, CA UI benefit is $450/wk, $11.25/hr, (+$25 if you qualify for stimulus).

I can't seem to get the following visual metaphors out of my craw.

The '08 hopium and change bus:

The new ride:

Choosing between multiple narratives...cool ride, power of the state etc. etc. - I'm going to go with reflected opacity, insecurity, and downright fear.

I mean...how many zombie hordes did they expect to face in Iowa?

And speaking of jobs...there's prolly a seven figure image consulting gig available for anyone with the balls to take it.

IOW...whatever happened to good old friendly red, white, and blue?
