Morning Audibles - 9.17.10 - Interview with Peter Orszag

Fascinating Interview of Peter Orszag on Charlie Rose (9.15.10)...

If you'd like to view a FULLER & RICHER view of this... Here's the link:

291 comments:

  1. I thought most of the interview was fascinating in terms of the "push & pull" that goes on inside a political dogfight...

He probably lost me a little in the last 4-5 minutes on his VIEWS that the key to the future is investment in education...

    Only for 2 main reasons...

#1 EDUCATION INVESTMENT - when understood in political terms, is usually mismanaged... So, I'd be dubious as to the practical benefits...

#2 THAT THE TYPE OF EDUCATION INVESTMENT - namely, that having to do with math/science/technology will actually turn out to be some kind of elisir...

People... We have STRUCTURAL DEBTS & unwinding to do... To attend to structural debts, we need to de-lever... We DON'T need to pay TOP DOLLAR to educate cute little mathemeticians to create faster software, faster internet, and more productivity so muffy can send OMG messages to her sorority sisters on the campus of "Tech State University" (while she's not painting her tits in the school colors and trying to avoid going viral at the GIRLS GONE WILD spring break extravaganza, or JASON on the lacrosse team doesn't get arrested in a frat porn scandal)...

Faster productivity actually = LESS JOBS...

Moreover - the strides taken in these areas are eventually STOLEN by others (like little sucker fish that swim in the wake of the big fish)...

CV says... Let somebody else take the lead (and invest) for awhile... I say - ATTEND TO YOUR KNITTING - hunker down...

    Get off the treadmill...

Otherwise - it was a fascinating interview... (and I want to hear more from this guy now that he's ESCAPED from the Candy Obama Bubble)...

    for I-Man-

people became people by eating prey- it's how we developed-

and I get your point regarding people being so far removed from their food that they get squeamish at the thought of killing their food-

but a little deprivation and hunger- and that squeamishness would go right out the window-

eating grains is a recent phenomena (10,000 years or so)

  4. Ahab, you cant be serious about that book... I've seen it cited previously by many folks far shadier than you, so I'm a bit disappointed.

People dont need to eat meat, its a decision, not a biological necessity.

The transition to a plant based diet sustained by organic fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is one of the most beneficial decisions to the planet earth that a human being can make.

That is of course just, like, my opinion, man.

And by no means am I mandating, or implying to mandate that anyone make that decision... other than I-Self.

Just threw it out there as a dovetail to the two pieces of fried chicken with a slice of cheese and some swine slapped in between from KFC conversation earlier... not trying to spark a debate on diet.

Just for disclosure, my quasi vegan diet started as a sort of protest against the industrial meat complex, which I find utterly sick, and refused to support through my diet. Its become more of a spiritual thing though I gotta say... I have way more positive energy than I did when I was eating meat and cheese at practically every meal.

Seriously, if only for a challenge, the 30 day vegan trial I did was worth it, and I'd recommend it to all of my cheese burger indulging friends.

The true test for me will be when I have the next keeper salmon in my grasp... will I bonk it or let it swim? Already decided not to duck hunt this year.

the chick was a 20 year Vegan- and is a devout feminist who wants the end of civilization-

you tell me why she eschewed her previous vegan ways? Her take away is that farming grains has taken away the natural world- far more than any other thing- and resulted in the subjection of people (a fact)-

  6. Posted this on the previous thread:

    Some anecdotal info:

Columbus Day weekend is a three day holiday for me and is also my B-Day. Was thinking about going to Vegas for the weekend....

Been investigating rooms/flights the last 48 hours. The prices are jumping pretty hard in just a two day period. Basically, Vegas, at least in the good spots, is getting booked. Places that could be had for "a song" last year are much more expensive. Maybe it's the holiday weekend or something...but, I'm actually surprised at how expensive it will be to stay somewhere on the Strip.

Bottom Line: Two years ago, Vegas was a fantastic bargain. Right now, not so much....

There has been a little "bottoming action" out there in the desert.

  7. okay.. i do need to watch the charlie rose video and i am a bit wine soaked.. but here is my take on the meat eating..

watch Deadwood, and you will never eat pork again.. (my fav)

seriously.. we do not need it... i think we have the teeth for emergency.. i would eat beef before poultry.. but the thot of eating either sickens me... i have a serious aversion to eating birds.. tho i'm still eating fish...

    http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2010/0927/politics-socialism-capitalism-private-enterprises-obama-business-problem.html

    How Obama Thinks

The President isn't exactly a socialist. So what's driving his hostility to private enterprise? Look to his roots.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ok, bruce, i'll throw this one out there:
"The rich, Obama insists, aren't paying their "fair share." This by itself seems odd given that the top 1% of Americans pay 40% of all federal income taxes; the next 9% of income earners pay another 30%. So the top 10% pays 70% of the taxes; the bottom 40% pays close to nothing. This does indeed seem unfair--to the rich."
re taxation, isn't it most like what willie sutton replied when asked, "willie, why do you rob banks?"

    ReplyDelete
  30. BinT-

from your article- I find this beyond bizarre-

A few months ago nasa Chief Charles Bolden announced that from now on the primary mission of America's space agency would be to improve relations with the Muslim world. Come again? Bolden said he got the word directly from the President. "He wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science and math and engineering."

    WTF?

    ReplyDelete
  31. and this:

He supports a $100 million mosque scheduled to be built near the site where terrorists in the name of Islam brought down the World Trade Center. Obama's rationale, that "our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable," seems utterly irrelevant to the issue of why the proposed Cordoba House should be constructed at Ground Zero.

I guess he really is taking the Bible at heart and turning the other cheek-

my take is that muslims play the "reaching out" game and "tolerance" game- as long as it is others reaching out to them

    ReplyDelete
  32. "historic contribution to science and math and engineering"...??? WTF????

Can someone please send me a list of Nobel Prize winners so I can verify this?

Then again, Obama is a Nobel Prize winner... Nevermind!...

I guess Newton, Fibonacci, Galileo, Da Vinci, Copernicus, Keplar, Einstein, et al were all Muslims...

Islam started around the 6th century AD...

It sure took all those genius "engineers, mathematicians, and scientists" awhile, then... to get us out of the DARK AGES...

    Just saying...

  42. wow- Denninger has gone off the rails- this is funny stuff-

The only "standout" number in the [CPI] report is the one for used vehicles . . .used cars up big again (15% over the last 12 months!) . . . Cash for clunkers created insane price inflation in a place where the less-wealthy cannot afford it as this is not a discretionary purchase. . .

. . .If you're an Obama supporter you need to take this one to heart folks: Obama effectively declared war on the lower-working class people in this country with that program, and now the evidence is in.

Contrary to the claims that this was "good for America", once again the politicians - including most especially President Obama - stuck the corncob in the working man's rear end. This, from a President who claims to be for the "working man and woman."

The only way you can possibly justify that claim given the now-irrefutable evidence is if you're Barney Frank and like getting screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. That comment about making muslims feel good about their contributions is just absolutely moronic.

This is not the responsibility of the United States, just my opinion.

that said, that part of the world did in fact make major contributions in extending our knowledge of math and science. As Islam ascended the Muslim world became a center for mathematical study. There was a major intellectual surge in the 8th century which if it hadn't occured might have otherwise led to most of the ancient mathematics being lost.

Check out info on Caliph al-Mamun where established in Baghdad the Beit al-hikma (house of wisdom) which operated much like the older Alexandrian "museum". According to tradition after seeing Aristotle in a dream the caliph decided to have all the ancient Greek works translated.

Three mathematicians (at minimum) from that culture deserve our recognition:

Abu Kamil Shuja, Al-Khwarizmi and Abu'l Wafa, these men all did very interest work with the Golden Ratio, but their main contributions were in Algebra.

Something tells me though, this is not the kind of recognition Obama had in mind.

See what you learn when you read a lot of books about some magical numbers 8-)

    ReplyDelete
  44. maybe arab mathematicians such as these two were in mind:

Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa Al-Khwarizmi
    (b. 790 - d. 850)
sometimes called the Father of Algebra

    Muhammad ibn Shuja
    (b. 850 - d. 930)
sometimes known as al'Hasib, worked on integer solutions of equations. His work was the basis of Fibonacci's books.

yep, might be the time to sell, but I need some more clarity personally before I make any big moves, I think a lot of people are getting active here though bulls and bears. 49. ahab, 9:53,

KD is spot on in that observation about used cars, I have a client that runs floor operations for the largest Ford dealership in the Philly area, he told me that CFC effed over the working guy trying to buy a used truck, or the marginal family that was looking for a used family truckster to haul the kids around, he said a few days after CFC was announced they jacked the price on virtually every used car in the lot.

His take was that the program was basically a bad idea all around. He'd understand those dynamics far better than me, was interesting to listen to him tell me about it at the time.

I still think the underlying thing that causes pressure, pressure of all kinds, it the yearly deficit (and summed, the national debt) and that if we no longer had a deficit, political extremist right and left wing views would get much less play. Right now, because we've allowed ourselves all these years of easy choices and (relatively) low taxes, we are in a pickle. I can assure you as one who has been in the highest tax bracket most of my working life, I don't like high taxes. But expecting the miasma that is America to agree on the solution is nearly impossible.

yeah, I saw that, but I immediately thought, well sure, the cost differences can be immense, but so can the salary that similar jobs command in each respective area, so that tends to cancel itself out, if that makes sense.

I'm going to make way more as an FA where I live now vs. my tiny hometown in northwestern PA, if I had the same income there as I do now, but the thing is, I wouldn't have the same income there.

I lean toward the side of distribution, it's what it "looks like" in the charts to me, and recent comments from McClellan, what I'm seeing with Put premiums, the II buy climax figures, and spastic sentiment help back that up.

the lowry's thing really keeps bugging me though, they've been around a long time and I respect that analysis.

  89. I detest the snuggie. I call it a "thnead." Have you ever read the Dr. Seuss book "The Lorax"? A "thnead" is a thing that no one needs! I went on a huge rant two decembers ago about the Snuggie because they were advertising it nonstop on CNBC...next thing you know my husband have it to me for Christmas. I've never seen my parents laugh so hard...boy was I pissed.

That's CV's one (well - maybe not ONE) glaring weakness...

I was in the car for an hour just to get out the tunnel, and another hour before I got 2 miles east of the tunnel. It was simply unconscionable."

perhaps, but if one follows back that culture further than the men I mentioned above, their heritage is hardly one of math and science. Not even close. If you want to follow it all the way back to Ishmael this is quite evident, and whether or not one believes the Bible is true is not relevant to this discussion because Islamic tradition considers Ishmael the ancestor of the Arab people.

  136. From DR today:

"The bottom line is that if the core goods CPI were to ever revert to its historic lows of 2003 and bump against the current historic low in the core services CPI, then we would indeed slip into a mild deflation of -0.2%. Food for thought because that prospect is not remotely priced into nominal bond yields, even with the 10-year note sitting around 2.7% and the long bond yield just under the 4% mark."

The sectors that are seeing a downtrend in pricing power are:

    •Delivery services
    •Furniture
    •Home improvement
    •Telecom services
    •Video/audio equipment
    •Toys

me: so it would seem this idea of inflation in the things you need, deflation in the things you want is still not happening, at least not yet. A forecaster would have to favor little to no inflation or at worst deflation, based on objective review of the data.

  178. "...& I'm sure McF has some other astrological significance to add"

well, for starters I and I have almost the same exact birthday one year apart so that makes it significant all by itself, that much is clear. :-)

    there is some astro significance:

9/22 is the Autumnal Equinox as I-man mentioned before, Five planets are in Water signs then, and emotions are supposed to be 'high' in that period.

A full moon at zero aries is also supposed to reignite the cardinal climax, so just watch your ass.

a while back a lot of people misinterpreted crawfords comments on the cardinal T climax, it didn't have to mean a stock market crash, there were some very bad things that happened in the world then, they just weren't in a stock market or in the US, go back and look at the dates, there were floods, etc.

so, I would expect next week to have some sort of major "news" development, whether or not that is for stocks remains to be seen.
