CV,

You have a great blog with great conversation going. It is your blog but if you want my advice (which you probably don't as you didn't ask) I'd leave it. This whole situation is kind of ridiculous given the amount of time that it has been going and the insults being hurled.

Basically, you have a great blog, forget about the others.

Do as you wish as I know you will.

Jennifer said...

Basically, you have a great blog, forget about the others.

Well said. I agree.

cv said...

@mcHappy

You're free to express that if you wish, and I'm sorry if that aspect of the process bothers you...

However, I'm of the the devout philosophy (in all parts of life - not just blogs), that a little bit of controversy needs to exist to keep the juices flowing...

You should note, that when I hurl criticisms around, I do it AT GREAT RISK to how my own personnae is perceived (it's a VERY BIG RISK which I'm acutely aware of - I don't just do it willy nilly)... Generally speaking, people DON'T LIKE IT when a person seems to act negative all the time...

But I do what I do WITH PURPOSE... And that purpose is to expose people to the darker side of things (or aspects that tend to get glazed over because people tend to avoid looking at things deeply)...

Frankly, I know myself (and my communication skills) in ways that aren't easy to express over a blog... But I know that, OVER TIME, people will either come to either

- know me as a COMPLETE person (which is my goal)
- abandon me in the process (which is also beneficial to me personally because I get a better idea for who is truly thinking, and who is only glancing

The bottom line...

I'm not simply looking for "conversation"... If I wanted that, I could go stand around the grocery store aisles and yak away with people...

I'm looking to "stand in" with a group of individuals who can express themselves boldly (in a world where most feel that they are TOLD WHAT TO DO)...

I don't want to "stand in" with a bunch of "agree-ers"... Those types won't stand the test of time... They will not SURVIVE...

Jenn.... this is too much to bear:

Coinstar Inc.'s (CSTR) third-quarter profit dropped 53% as the prior-year impact of discontinued operations masked core earnings growth that topped expectations on sharply higher revenue.

Shares were up 15% to $53.09 in after-hours trading as the DVD kiosk operator raised its earnings target for the year to $2.14 to $2.20 a share from $1.88 to $2 and tightened its revenue estimate.

Coinstar has seen its Redbox business grow rapidly and has sold ancillary operations to focus on the unit and its coin-counting operations, including its electronic-payment services business earlier this year. DVD revenue, the vast bulk of the total, jumped 54% to $305.5 million in the latest quarter.

"as the prior-year impact of discontinued operations masked core earnings growth"

That's a recipe for earnings manipulation. When they have a big loss from discontinued operations, companies sometimes try to hide continuing operations losses in the discontinued operations losses.

Basically, the way I learned to raise a red flag is this. Watch for a spike in core margin ((Sales - COGS - SGA)/Sales). When you see one, look to see if there is a simultaneous spike in non-operating expenses. If so, then dig deeper to see if any operating expenses have been reclassified.

I'm a practical guy... & I know what the PRACTICAL ways to do it are...(fight the Fed)

- don't botrrow money
- don't hold your money in banks
- hoarde necessary assets before your so called "money" loses it's buying power

Everyone laughs at me that has been using their CHASE cards for purchases all summer where the BIG DEAL is that your purchase gets ROUNDED UP to the nearest dollar and that money gets deposited in a savings account that gets paid 1% interest...

Whoop-de-fucking-doo!

I pay cash, ask for my change back (round up to the next dollar), and ask for change back in nickels... Toss em all in a huge 100 gallon garbage can...

The copper value of the nickels has gone up 25% over the summer...

If you walk in to a bank today with $10 bucks and ask for 5 $2 nickel rolls, you just made yourself 20% right then and there TAX FREE...

but here's the thing, as I'm to understand it if you were motivated enough, you could purchase similar technology to see the orders, KidD has talked about this several times over the last few months, it's sort of an empty argument when that is considered. Also, if HFT's/Algo's are quote stuffing, just because they can see "orders" doesn't mean they know for sure if they are real or not, the most sophisticated technology couldn't capture that.

my point was that all companies are going to have an advantage over an individual when it comes to information, in every single business, this is not exclusive to wall street.

Well, you probably could, but it sounds a little silly this way, it makes more sense to just say the odds were stacked against you competing with a behemoth like McD's.

I'll give you a perfect example...

I don't study EWI (like you, or McF, or Andy do)... But I'm intrigued by the philosophy...

Mainly the notion of "socioeconomics"...

I used to go to DANERICS blog every day (especially when I started authoring this one because I wanted something to help me along with some modest framework)...

I hardly go at all anymore (maybe about twice in the lat month)...

Not that it's a bad blog... But it's just that these minute waves that DAN is trying to dissect is a bit like sitting outside knitting in a hurricane...

I'd rather be in touch with what's going on in a larger realm... The LARGER REALM is that we happen to be in a period where we're going NOWHERE FAST...

That too, will play itself out cyclically... And at that point, the conversation will probably reflect it...

Sometimes there's just nothing INTERESTING to say...

Anyway, I had a lot of fun playing with all of them last year. But could not do it this year.

Great fun, especially if it is with the right people.

U.S. authorities were investigating "potentially suspicious items" on Friday on cargo planes that landed at airports in Newark, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, the Transportation Security Administration said.

American Dream?

Some things come to mind:

1. Never have to think about anything "complex"
2. No work on the weekends
3. Rims, ideally ones that spin
4. A few victories in class action lawsuits
5. stainless steel appliances
6. vacation home(s) as well as large annual vacation
7. 10%+ annual returns with no losses and no fees
8. ability to eat like a pig whenever you desire
9. the "right" to retire comfortably
10. be on tv for something
11. ability to buy a home and not pay for it
12. ability to use a credit card and not pay
13. montly bank account credits, for living the American Dream

that's probably enough, I think it's a long long list

*as an aside, the big buzz in one of the local schools is that they will no longer give students a class rank in order to "help them focus better on their education"

But will they dive first ???

karen said...

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)-- Oil futures fell Friday following a report showing modest U.S. economic growth in the third quarter.

Light, sweet crude for December delivery lost $1.01, or 1.2%, to $81.17 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after hitting an intraday low of $80.56. Brent crude on the ICE futures exchange gave up 76 cents, or 0.9%, to trade recently at $82.83 a barrel.

The decline follows the U.S. Commerce Department's report of 2% growth in third-quarter gross domestic product, slightly below the 2.1% expected by economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires. Oil traders sold out of positions taken earlier in the week that would have profited should a bigger GDP expansion have sent prices sharply higher, said Jason Schenker, chief economist at Prestige Economics.

c'mon....he's even still using "soft-patch"

The consumate flipper this year, you know, when the "facts" changed....he was looking for 15-20% upside in May, got all out of stocks by early July and then back in July 26 citing that economic data wasn't so bad. You know, because he's using the economy to determine the future trend of stock prices.

How many of you got in your car today and looked in your rearview while you drove where you needed to go? I know I did.
